Yes, we were camping at Lupine 7/28 and 7/29! (more on that later). Did we see you??

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

Caltrans updated their closure information to match what some of us have seen, "FROM THE JCT OF SR 39 TO 2.6 MI WEST OF BIG PINES." Unknown whether the web feedback form I filled out on Sunday to that effect had anything to do with it, but I'll call it a win.

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

Quick message. 1. I laid eyes on Grassy Hollow today. The eastern closure is definitely at Grassy Hollow. That's unlikely to change, because... 2. I laid eyes on the hole in the road. It's west of Grassy Hollow about 1/2 mile. No equipment there, nothing going on. They filled it in with gravel/dirt ...

Have you forest bathed? (Not what you think)

Apparently when summiting Baldy last weekend, I was too actively participating in nature and not following the latest health trend of ... well anyway. :q27:

Oooh, thank you! I saw the spring on the map and figured something must have supplied that water tank, but didn't know whether it was long inactive.

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

Never did call because we decided to go out of Islip Saddle regardless. But I can now confirm that the western end of the closure is indeed immediately past the Islip Saddle parking area. Can't edit my conjecture about that above due to the forum oddities, but I'll try again later.

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

Thanks for that. I wonder is it possible they meant the west end was moved east to Vincent Gap?? There are multiple sources that say the other way around though. Just noticed this: Aug 5th Moon Light Hike to Baden Powell has been cancelled due to Highway 2 road closure. That sounds like Vincent Gap ...

Been remiss at posting this, but here's the sad state of the Guffy spring as of May 29: https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm5.staticflickr.com/4262/35781585025_4d2fd8993d_c.jpg DSC00667 by moore91024 , on Flickr The PCT water report suggests that general state persists. Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

Has anyone visually confirmed either endpoint of the closure in the past week or so? On Sat 6/24 we drove out from Inspiration Pt to see it for ourselves and indeed, the road was coned off immediately past the driveway into Grassy Hollow. There were also a lot of cars parked on the sides of the high...

Re: Silver Fish rd conditions to Stone Cabin Flat

Yikes! I'll plan on a bike-n-hike, or perhaps a bike-n-bail.

The final fire ops map indicates it didn't burn. Looks like part of the road was cleared for fire line, but not the whole length.

Thanks!

Silver Fish rd conditions to Stone Cabin Flat

Who's been to "Stone Cabin Flat"? What's the road/trail like past White Saddle? I am wondering if I could bike all the way or should I plan on changing to hiking at some point. Enthusiastic but not very strong biker. I'm familiar with getting to White Saddle. Thanks!

For birds I like this one

An Introduction to Southern California Birds

Because it is limited to So Cal, it is feasible to flip through the whole thing to match up whatever you've seen with a photo. Looks like it's out of print but availability is decent.

I was there Saturday 6/24. At that time, the gate immediately at the Guffy Campground sign was closed, so no access to either Lupine or the Wright Mtn direction. This info is one week stale.

Re: Best day hike?

I have seen them run the lifts on Fridays in summer, so keep an eye for changes at the web page if that's your target day. Wait, actually at the top of the front page says lifts Friday, Saturday, Sunday 7am-7pm, which contradicts the "Scenic lift ride" data found further down the page tha...

Aren't there a lot more gates now? Seems like a smaller closure area could be set up.

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

Heads up, 2 closed for a sinkhole

That says it's closed from Islip Saddle to Grassy Hollow, but the DOT website site sounds like it's Inspiration Point rather than Grassy Hollow, so details are slightly sketchy.

Re: Cheater Mt Gleason TR

I didn't look into any water sources, having access to plenty of it in the truck. :D But I'd think the PCT water report https://pctwater.com would be as good as any resource... it suggests Big Buck trail camp had good flow a few days ago. Also, my colleague said the ranger who gave them the key said...

Cheater Mt Gleason TR

Cheater because I simply rode in with a couple colleagues/friends who were going there to repair some equipment. I've considered whether it's uncool to post a TR if no self-powered locomotion was involved, but eventually decided that since the PCT is open, the conditions might be of interest if some...

Spring Snow at Crystal Lake

We headed up to Crystal Lake yesterday for a snow hike. Rain turned to snow just as we were turning into the lake area. We parked where the road was closed near "Loop G," where it was 34 degrees with graupel falling. We headed up the trail toward the fire road. https://eispiraten.com/image...

Carrizo Plain bike loop

We got this to happen! Originally planned it for Tuesday 4/18, but due to rain in SLO county, we put it off until Thursday given several warnings I had seen about roads staying muddy for days. It was the tail end of the bloom, but the yellows were still nice, especially in the area of Selby Rd. They...

I went to Nojoqui Falls as a kid, probably whining about the long walk all the way. I was taught to pronounce it like "Na hooey." Thought about stopping in when driving past in recent years, but hadn't pulled the trigger. Good to see it again!

We set out on from Mt Wilson a few years ago on the Rim trail. I think our original goal was Newcomb Peak. However, when we reached the pass, we agreed that neither of us was looking forward to going back up the Rim trail, which was slidy and had tons of face-height poodle dog at the time. We pulled...
