Re: 2017-02-04 Fatality near Islip Saddle - wtf happened?

We've turned back from a PCT trip to Little Jimmy due to snow, too. The fire road works great for non-adrenaline junkies. Nice and wide.

Re: Winter Creek, Hoegees, and Loos

I went for a run this morning down the Gabrielino, up and over Zion and back to Chantry via Upper Winter Creek. The bathrooms at Cascade and Spruce Grove were locked, with no signage like the ones at Hogees had. Thanks for the report. ANF amenities listings would appear to be out of date. https://w...

Re: Winter Creek, Hoegees, and Loos

This is weird. Does somebody actually think that (er...) dispersed elimination is the best solution here? It's not the back country. I mean, DeVore (restroom-free and I'm cool with that) is one thing but Hoegee's is another. They should have estimated utilization numbers for the campgrounds that est...

Re: Bailey canyon - Jones Pk - Mt Wilson trail

I wouldn't say the straight-up route had gotten more messed up than the previous time I had seen it, but it was a Station fire firebreak, I believe, and was pretty steep and slidy at least since that time. The newer approach is more like a regular trail at first and then it joins the former firebrea...

Nice! We managed a Waterman snowshoe trip last year and sat for a while drinking hot chocolate. Would do it again if we can find the right time.

Ha, yes it was definitely the mustache guy I saw; didn't really get a look at anyone else. We almost must have passed you going the other way on the Upper Winter Creek but I guess I wasn't paying attention. Heck, maybe we passed right as the 4 of you were talking. We were a tallish guy and a short g...

Re: Winter Creek, Hoegees, and Loos

I think we crossed paths again. Well, hi! :D But I'm not sure the times line up. I took that photo at 1:30 pm as we were departing. Maybe we saw the same FS person(s)? We passed them on the way out; they had pulled off the trail among some rocks and they had radios. I thought it was 2 of them. Gues...

My most popular thread ever is about toilets! Awesome!
HikeUp wrote: I don't pick up anyone's trash.
I do limit it to clean-ish plastic and mylar items and use an inverted trash bag. Paper products of unknown provenance is a bit much (see above, "attendant toilet paper").

Re: Winter Creek, Hoegees, and Loos

So the EPA thinks it's better to have human waste all over the place instead of two localized areas? Not sure the sign is accurate... The gist is probably so... It would be nice if people will comply with the backcountry disposal recommendations but I don't see it happening. I had the same thoughts...

Winter Creek, Hoegees, and Loos

The gods of Chantry parking smiled upon us and we got a quick winter creek loop in. There's plenty of water in the campground and everywhere -- really good to see and hear. A section of road right at the start past the gate is one lane, evidently due to some problems in the rain, so we'll see how it...

Bailey canyon - Jones Pk - Mt Wilson trail

Day before Thanksgiving we took advantage of "front country weather" and hit some of our home trails. Walked out our front door in NE Sierra Madre, over to Bailey Canyon Park, up to Jones Peak. There's a partially new route up Jones since I've last been there. You go just a bit more east p...

Re: Islip Peak, with Little Jimmy Spring water report

No, I saw 2 hunters around their truck at that turnout roughly across from the road to Glenwood Dad's Camp, but that's all I noticed. Of course it was Friday, so overall the population was not high. Saw 4 apparent overnighters at or near Little Jimmy, but they didn't look like they had hunting cloth...

Islip Peak, with Little Jimmy Spring water report

We did Islip Saddle-Little Jimmy CG-Little Jimmy Spring-Windy Gap-Islip Peak on Friday. Lots of graffiti and shortcutting at the start where the PCT switchbacks up from the 2. Someone stole the ammo box for the register. The notebooks and pencils are now in a plastic bag held down by rocks. Little J...

Re: How's the water situation at Cooper Canyon Trail Camp?

Back from my own recon. There's enough in the campground to filter right now, but I wouldn't count on it for long without rain (just some pools with no noticeable movement). There's ample water back near the Burkhardt/PCT junction. Spigots are leaking in Buckhorn CG so they seem to be on.

Turned out I had the opportunity to do my own recon today. Decker is flowing a little and the pool is suitable for pumping. There's no longer any opportunity to access the spring water before it goes into the pool.

Anyone been by Decker Spring lately? It's the one on the Old Mt Wilson Trail a bit below Orchard Camp, where some surface water also crosses the trail (or did).

Yes! Very slightly overgrown, with some poison oak causing a "please keep your hands and arms inside the ride" condition in one spot I recall, but nothing too difficult.

Zion loop, Spruce Grove & Hoegee's water report

Chantry's long been on my list of locations best suited for non-weekend visits. Got up there and did the Zion loop, counterclockwise, 9/23. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/c5.staticflickr.com/6/5204/30012570116_8fc2eebfd1_c.jpg DSC00486 by moore91024 , on Flickr There's a new sign since I've ...

I disagree with "By reducing the rows and rows of parked cars along our mountain roads..." from that article. There will be as many cars and more people. :(

Spent 2 nights in Three Rivers in early August and hiked to Heather Lakes from the Wolverton trailhead - Watchtower trail out, Hump trail back.
