Re: John W. Robinson Archives
That first map is confusing. I THINK it's just drawn very sloppily. What's going on with the bottom of Rubio Canyon? Where's the incline railway and the PE rail connecting to it supposed to be?
It's an Idle Hour brochure, not a Lowe Railway brochure, so good luck using their map to find a rival ...

No, they goofed up the years on the photo captions. The two photos are from December 2025.dima wrote: Sun Jan 11, 2026 7:33 pm One of the photo's captions says "1997". Have you really been running that group for that long?

LA Times article on trail restoration
The Rubio Canyon Trail Crew and I appear in this LA Times article about restoring trails in the Eaton and Palisades burn areas. The article features several local trail crews and their leaders.

Re: Eaton Fire area open now?
I drove by the Eaton Canyon Natural Area on Saturday and the entrances are all still fenced off and closed with warning signs. So even if they don't renew the closure order, the main trailheads in Altadena are inaccessible. Also, the Arroyos and Foothills Conservancy hasn't reopened the Rubio Canyon ...

Altadena Artists Post-Fire
Below is a short video about artists in Altadena who lost everything in the Eaton Fire. Descanso Gardens then contacted them and invited them to work on new projects. Robert Lang , a world-renowned origami artist, appears in the short documentary. Before the fire he regularly helped with trail work ...

Re: Scofflaws hiking through burn areas
The rationale for the Eaton closure is provided in the first line of the order. You might disagree with the rationale or the boundary, but the FS does communicate its basic reasoning for shutting down areas. Also, please don't use this forum for finding and shaming people who go into closure areas.

Thanks for the wonderful reports! We'll have to start calling Altadena the Pre-Gabes. There might be an opportunity delivering Uber Eats to summits. You could charge $100 for an In-and-Out cheeseburger on Iron Mountain.

"Owner of a Lonely Heart" in the style of Strapping Young Lad. Need I say more? Devin Townsend, who formed SYL in 1994, says it's "accurate." I think it kicks ass!

Isn't there a way to hike Johnstone Peak from La Verne? I also found similar local walks in Rancho Cucamonga, starting around Beryl Avenue, I think. Thanks for the report and photos.

Thanks for the report and pictures. I recall Lone Pine being a fun scramble. I think I broke a hiking pole sliding down the snow-covered chute. Back when I did dumb stuff like that. But, I agree, the views are really nice from the summit.

This is great. Thanks for cleaning up the mountains! One of my better hauls was cleaning up an abandoned, bear-ravaged campsite at Upper Henninger. It was only a smelly two-person tent, though, plus a torn sleeping bag, a bunch of junky clothes and random garbage. The can opener and taser were ...

Looks like a fun scramble. Thanks for the report and pictures. That video was interesting too. I'll have to start bringing diagrams with me on hikes to explain stuff. Some people are more visual learners. Maybe if I diagram how to toss your baby's dirty diaper into a trash bin, the East Fork won't ...
