Extended through Jan. 31. Good luck staying sane, mountain people! Some of the city wilderness parks are open, like Glendora.

Re: Entire ANF temporarily closed

The Eaton Fire burn zone and area around it, sure there should be a closure order, just like the FS does for any wildfire, like the Bridge, Bobcat, etc. But the ENTIRE ANF? I don't understand that.

It's because of the "critical" fire danger, which triggers the most extreme restrictions ...

I know Edgar McGregor from Facebook. He's active in Eaton Canyon, does a lot of cleanup over there, and general reporting of events in the area. NPR interviewed him about the Eaton Fire. He helped warn and prepare neighbors about the threat of fire during the wind storm.

LA County has a new field survey map. They are currently documenting the fire damage to each house, including pictures. The survey is incomplete, but this is an example of one area between Fair Oaks and Lake, and into Mount Curve.

Owl Canyon & Rainbow Basin

Tired of breathing smoke and ash from the Eaton Fire, I decided to drive to the high desert and hike around the Barstow area. Thankfully Jeff was able to join me at the last minute, so I wasn't alone for the Owl Canyon and Rainbow Basin scramble. Stavros Basis describes this beautiful loop hike at ...

Btw, where do you park for this Alder Creek trail, cause its a lot of no stopping signs.

We ignore the signs and park in the turnout at Alder Creek. So far, so good, though we do display special permits for trail crew. I kind of doubt you'll get ticketed if you're in a turnout. PM me for another ...

I haven't done much in the Upper Big Tujunga area. I've been helping restore the Alder Creek Trail, and some of us hiked the Strawberry Trail out of Colby Bridge. But that's pretty much been it. So on Tuesday I took Cecelia to explore Lynx Gulch.

My planning consisted of checking CalTopo and ...
