Dark Canyon Trail to Grizzly Flat
Yesterday Cecelia and I checked out the Dark Canyon Trail to Grizzly Flat. This singletrack begins from the ACH at Dark Canyon, climbs to Tujunga Pass (Clemens Saddle), then descends to Grizzly Flat through the Vasquez Creek watershed. The section north of the pass was restored in the last couple ye...

Hi Carl,
Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your trips! I don't recall hearing about the Denver Indicator Mine. Is it pretty interesting? How big is it? I look forward to reading about your other trips.

I figure she's super strong and could carry me down a mountain if necessary. Also, she might be lactating and I could survive off her breast milk for a week or two. Only if I were desperate of course.

Re: San Gabe Rescues 2024
I could probably do easy winter Baldy in jeans, but not without proper socks, waterproof boots, gaiters, spikes, and a really warm jacket and face/head/eye protection. I got to 9.5k once and had to turn around because I burned through all my thick socks while postholing without gaiters. It was 5 deg...

Dr. Drew on firebreaks
In this interview Dr. Drew makes a couple claims. First, that wildfires are a problem because we've stopped doing forest management, which I think is partially true. It's not the entire answer though. Second, Drew claims that the Gabes aren't covered with firebreaks anymore because they interfere wi...

Re: MISSING HIKER ON MT BALDY (Lifei Huang)
I don't think we know yet how prepared this young woman was, or what exactly she was attempting to do. Based on early reports, she might have taken a fall, which happens to the best of us. It was a big risk though heading up solo during a winter storm. The sort of risk I wouldn't take.

Re: MISSING HIKER ON MT BALDY (Lisei Huang)
Only 22 years old. The missing woman was identified as Lisei Huang, 22, from El Monte, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. On Sunday, Feb. 4, deputies received a call about the missing hiker at around 11:14 p.m. Huang headed out on a solo hike at around 2 p.m. that day. Hour...

Open Door Trail to Azusa & Glendora Peaks
This morning Cecelia and I hiked the Open Door Trail to Azusa and Glendora Peaks. This path starts at the Church of the Open Door in Glendora. Park in the church's overflow lot, which is directly across from the trailhead. IMG_20240204_092323968_HDR.jpg You cross Hook Canyon channel, then pass by a ...

The Beak Overshadoweth
I was checking the LA weather radar and noticed that Turtle's Beak appears prominently on the map. You'd think that zoomed out the map would display official, legit peaks. But here we are in 2024, and the pirates rule the maps. Congrats, you clever, clever editors. Screenshot_20240204-075457-571.png

Assuming it was the Lyft driver who saw him last, that means Zach decided to go to Wilson on a Friday night at sunset. That's not normal if he were planning to hike down the mountain. But if he went up there simply to observe the sky ... Screenshot_20240203-210446-384.png then something unpredictabl...

Re: Pirate Hikes for Pre-Schoolers
Does anyone know why a mountain with its own website is ignored everywhere else? I'm FB friends with Rex Frankel. He posts about Mt. Rexmore on FB. His nonprofit purchased the land to connect with other open spaces. The "peaks" are probably too new and too small to be of much interest to ...

ABC News story. Nothing new, but I wonder if he was parked at Eaton Saddle, based on the search areas being Mt. Wilson and Mt. Lowe. I haven't seen a mention of where he was parked.

I think we dropped in south of the bridge and only made it about 600 or 700 feet downstream. We climbed out on the slope that leads to the water tank over there. There was/is a motorcycle down on the slope.

Thanks for the report. Yeah, that trail is pretty nice when it's overcast. It's like hiking in a spooky movie where a killer is chasing you through the misty woods, and that killer ends up being a baby Sasquatch.

Thanks for the report. Willie and I attempted to descend Woodwardia a few years ago, but we hit a big cliff not far below the highway, and we couldn't find a bypass. Exploring other branches of Dark Canyon is on my bucket list, but I think they're all packed with falls. https://youtu.be/0ok1OdWCgss?...
