Are there only a few measurements for wit, like the phases of the moon? What if he was actually 54 percent witty, could he have survived? And how did he prepare the rice? The IQ test wasn't invented until two years later in 1904, so maybe "half-wit" was generally used to describe the ment...

Uncle Rico's Birthday Hike Vol. 6

It has become a bit of a tradition now. Yesterday was the sixth time we've celebrated Uncle Rico's birthday by going on a group hike. In 2016 a few of us explored Copter Ridge. 160515 copter ridge.JPG In 2017, Hawkins Ridge. 170513 hawkins ridge.JPG In 2018 Rico and I explored Telegraph's east ridge...

Good news! On this day, May 12 in 1902, the lost Louis Letter was found alive. He had departed Martin's Camp on May 8, a Thursday, to go fishing. His trouble was not discovered until the next day, when he did not return to Pasadena. A search party failed to find him on Saturday. Then Guy Bisbee, a g...

Here's one for Mother's Day! Yesterday, May 10th, was the anniversary of Russell Hubbard's rescue from Eaton Canyon. In 1931 he and his mother hiked two miles down from Alpine Tavern. Suddenly the wind blew off her hat. Russell, being a good son, jumped to retrieve the item. While doing so he manage...

If my false Panorama Peak / Tophat TR in any way played a part in inspiring this hike to happen, then I feel honored! It's been on my to-do list for years, and now was a good time for me. So cool to be able to reference that old photo. Where did you get it? From Walker. I think he found an old Swit...

The Idlehour is being improved, I'm told by the Lowelifes. They are knocking back the heavier brush, removing downed trees, and doing treadwork. The spring growth, however, has light vegetation covering sections along the creek. I plan to attack it soon with my machete. IMG_20230505_084503281.jpg (P...

Switzer to Panorama Peak

Back in the day, when everything had a proper name, 4520' was called Panorama Peak. Presumably an eastbound trail took people from Switzer's Camp to a viewing platform atop the summit boulder. Panorama 1.JPG Today that trail remains lost, but with some effort this peak can be accessed via its ridges...

On April 29, 1908, the first Mt. Wilson trail race took place. Back then the runners started from the foot of the trail, climbed to the summit, took a thirty-minute break, and then descended. The event was managed by Charlie Fox, and the award was the Fox Medal, also called the Police Gazette Medal....

Who could forget the day Elmer Ramage went insane? It was the morning of April 20, 1909. Ramage took a trip on the trolley to Mt. Lowe. At the end of the line, around noon, he entered the tavern, knelt down and started praying. He then explained that he had been put in charge of the Henry Huntington...

Walker climbed the next ridge to the South (between the two Bear Canyon drainages). It is much more hairy, and probably that's what you're thinking of. Walker has been all over the Arroyo Seco area. He sent this report before you were added to the email threads: "I also paid several visits to ...

They are CCC buildings from the New Deal era. The Civilian Conservation Corps had a camp on that ridge, seen in this 1934 aerial.

On April 18, 1914, one Harvey Light was caught robbing cabins in the Arroyo Seco. He tried to flee up a cliff, but fell instead and broke a leg. Dumbass.

It had been a few years since my last trip to Dark Canyon. In 2018 I led the Saturday Morning Hikers. This time I went with fellow trail workers, Jason, Scoops and Anastassios. You're pretty brave carrying the kid on your back. I fall down trying to walk and chew gum at the same time.

I'll have to go hike that road so I can get a ride with the firefighters. Sounds cool.

Thanks for the report.
