Yeah, wild stuff. Nowadays I tend to agree with the debunker Mick West. He has some good stuff on the video footage too if you browse through his videos.

Re: The FOrum Ate my TrIp RePoRt - BIG MOUNTAIN BIKE STUFF

Thanks for the "report"? I keep telling myself I'll start writing my reports in Google Docs before copying them into Tapatalk, but I never do it. Thus, periodically I'll lose some text to the Trickster Demon of Back Buttons. But I've learned to at least periodically copy my text to the cli...

Don't be Phillip Carpenter! Are you saying we should blow off our fingers then? Back in 1917, young Robert McCain couldn't wait until the Fourth to blow off his fingers. He did it a full two weeks beforehand. Screenshot_20230705-093212-469.png (Los Angeles Herald, June 20, 1917) Of course if I had ...

A few years ago, the observatory had its hundredth anniversary of 'first light' on the beautiful 100-inch Hooker telescope. Very cool that you made the event. In 1917 the poet Alfred Noyes attended the first trial of the telescope. In the prologue of "Watchers of the Sky" he describes the...

Re: Missing man near Millard (Albert Zisook)

At least five SAR groups are looking for him now. I was privately informed that SAR has reason to suspect that he made it to upper Millard Canyon, which means they have a huge area to search. Assuming SAR has walked all the trails within ten or fifteen miles, odds are he went or fell off trail.

On the 4th of July, some people blow off their fingers with fireworks, while others fall off a trail and die. Unfortunately Phillip Carpenter did the latter in 1927. Don't be Phillip Carpenter! Stay safe out there!

On July 1, 1917, Jack Stoner of the International Mack Corporation drove a Mack truck to the summit of Mt. Wilson. His load wasn't any ordinary load. It was the one-of-a-kind, 100-inch mirror for the Carnegie Institute's new telescope. Stoner took on this responsibility himself, trusting no other wi...

That is so interesting! He doesn't go into why the renamings were happening. I wonder. After reading many old articles, it seems that there were two, competing conventions for naming things: man-centered versus nature-centered. Those oriented toward man, they preferred naming natural objects after ...

On June 30, 1921, a forest fire threatened the homestead of Ida Greenfield in Placerita Canyon. All alone, she tried to fight the fire with a shovel. The heat probably overwhelmed her and she unfortunately succumbed to exhaustion. Screenshot_20230630-080946-802.png (Los Angeles Herald, July 1, 1921)

On June 29, 1887, the Los Angeles Herald published a letter from W. A. Goodyear. Watson A. Goodyear was a well-known geologist and surveyor for California. Among other things, he's credited with the first ascent of San Gorgonio (called San Bernardino back then). And he was part of the California Geo...

...the frequency of accidents is proportional to the number of people who visit the area. I don't think this is accurate. What numbers are you basing this claim on? Was there a heavy storm going on the day he disappeared? Yes. He went up in the middle of a series of winter storms. A woman died on Baldy the week before he went missing. SAR initially had trouble looking for him due to the storm. The storms were so bad that they didn't find his body. People don't...

Based on early photos from West Valley SAR, I'm guessing he went up the Ski Hut Trail. He probably became disoriented in the storm, couldn't see shi...

Point 7296 from Crystal Lake

On Sunday a few of us drove to the Crystal Lake Recreation Area. The place was packed with campers, not many hikers. Cecelia and I stopped at the Cafe for an Adventure Pass and hot chocolate. Then, around 7 AM, we joined David R, Uncle Rico and HikeUp at the Windy Gap Trailhead. It was a very pleasa...

Only a few days after putting prisoners to work on the Manker Flat Highway, county officers lost track of two criminals. Roy Brown and Bill Rich escaped the prisoner camp at Manker Flat on June 21, 1926. Brown was later re-captured on June 27. I couldn't find more info on Rich, who was still at larg...

On June 20, 1886, the Los Angeles Herald reported that E.W. Giddings had claimed a peak above Millard Canyon. He raised his white flag presumably atop Peak 4704, to honor Joshua Giddings, the famous abolitionist. I think Joshua was EW's uncle, but don't quote me on that. Screenshot_20230620-144919-5...

In 1926, June 17th marked the start of the planned Manker Flats highway. The grand dream included a scenic motorway over Mt. Baldy, connecting San Antonio Canyon with the North Fork of Lytle Creek. Ultimately the project failed due to landslides. There were smaller issues and problems, some of which...

That's right. No above ground outlet. I wonder, though, if it drains under ground to the north fork?
