Re: Middle Fork Trail (Lytle Creek)
Very thorough reply, Hike Up. It felt like I was actually walking the trail myself. I think it's worth going to Commanche Camp if you have the time. It's peaceful and lush, very pretty in autumn with the changing leaves. From Third Stream you cross the creek, head up and left on the slightly faint, ...

Re: Sugarloaf and Ontario via Falling Rock Canyon 7/20/2013
Great pictures. I still haven't done Sugarloaf. But maybe now I'm sufficiently motivated to get my butt up there.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Manker to Coldwater XC Loop
Brad, Michelle, Willie, and I started from Manker Flat at 6:40 AM. We made our way up broad, boulder-strewn Big Butch Wash, passing a weak but still active spring around 6,920'. Around this same elevation the canyon turned left, becoming narrow with some large plants to push through while climbing b...

Thanks for the neat pics and report. It was cool hearing you talk about the weather. How do you function on 1000 calories for two days?! I require at least that much to sit around the house and watch movies for a day.

Triumph In Manker Canyon
On Sunday Willie and I started up Manker Canyon at 6:36 AM. A few other cars had beaten us to the Baldy Lift parking lot. A layer of high clouds would keep the heat away and periodically tease us with drizzles all morning. It would also allow long-range views up and down the canyon. By 6:49 we finis...

Re: Hump Day Hike to Stockton Flat
I always thought walking straight down Coldwater Canyon from the saddle between Thunder and Telegraph would go quite easily. There was some kind of road heading up Coldwater Canyon's west bank. Anyone know how far it goes or the condition? Obviously it doesn't go all the way to the Thunder/Telegrap...

Hump Day Hike to Stockton Flat
The Baldy Ski Lift parking lot was empty on Wednesday at 12:30 PM. During my pre-hike ritual, some guy in a SUV drove to the end of the lot, turned around, and headed back down the road. This happens a lot on weekdays. It happened again at 6:30 PM, during my post-hike ritual. Most likely I keep spoi...

@ Sean, not his, hers, Ima girl. Sorry. I fixed the mistake in the post. Incidentally, last year Brett Maune drove from Los Angeles to Whitney Portal, and then immediately sprinted up to Whitney via the Mountaineer's Route in 1:56:54. In his trip report he mentions that he has "a several hour ...

Re: elevation sickness/AMS
If you are going up 3000 ft / hr for 11000 ft, you are more likely to get altitude sickness than going up 1500 ft / hr. You have a good point Ze, but keep in mind that Everyday stays within the "High Altitude" range (5k-11.5k). This is the low-end of the spectrum for AMS. I live at 400 ft...

Re: Lone Pine Peak With Friends
Below are some pictures showing the routes I described from Camp Lake to Meysan Lake. The red line is the use trail option, which puts you on an overlook about 100 feet above the lake. You could then scramble down to it a couple of ways. The blue line is the more challenging cross-country, rock-scra...

Re: elevation sickness/AMS
*I have no data to support this, but I have seen that the women I climb with at elevation seem to have an edge over the men. Again, no data, just observations. Assuming hydration is a key factor in preventing AMS, then women will have some natural advantages over men: 1. Women generally have less b...

Re: Lone Pine Peak With Friends
The trail is very nice and easy to follow all the way to Camp Lake. From there it is easy cross-country with a discernible use trail, starting beside the stream feeding Camp Lake, then turning left, crossing the stream and climbing a short distance up a rocky slope to a level area overlooking the Me...

Re: elevation sickness/AMS
the best cure for it is prevention. electrolytes and hydration are dietary necessities. rest is also helpful. I agree that diet and nutrition are key factors. If you do not keep yourself adequately hydrated and fed, then your body cannot focus on respiration, which is critical when the oxygen press...

Re: Why are these spots so popular/crowded these days?
Most if not all these people wouldn't do this at home or in their neighborhood. Why do they feel it is OK here? Why wouldn't they do it at home or in their neighborhood? For years I have been cleaning up other people's litter and dog poop in front of my house near the sidewalk. Most likely people w...

Re: Mt. Waterman (the easy way)
But yeah, the Waterman benchmark does say "Twin." Not really sure why... In 1930, when the USGS surveyed this region, I believe the conversation on Waterman Mountain went something like this: Melvin: Hey, Stanley, do you think this is the summit? Stanley: Of course it is, you numbskull. D...
