Re: Bobcat Fire: closure info, what's open

Please note that part of the forest above Arcadia and Monrovia is still under a closure order. Basically the entire Big Santa Anita watershed is closed.

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)

The thread is unlocked. Thank you, everyone, for your comments and for searching the roads and trailheads. I've talked with Sierra Madre SAR and given them info and ideas. They are also talking with the family. SAR is searching for him now. It's probably best not to go looking yourself. Not only is ...

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)

5:25 update, I drove a giant loop looking for his car. After checking ACH, I took AFH to Mt. Emma, Pearblossom, back up AFH to Aliso Cyn. I drove down Aliso Cyn to the Monument boundary and back up to AFH to Big Tujunga Cyn Rd. I checked all turnouts, campgrounds, trailheads, picnic areas and paved ...

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)

Colin Walker is missing. His brother has reported not hearing from him over the weekend. Colin hikes off trail a lot and might be somewhere in or near the Arroyo Seco watershed area. Please post here or contact local police if you have information on his whereabouts. IMG_20230507_063735013_HDR.jpg I...

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)

Thank you for reaching out. I'm disheartened to hear about this. Please tell SAR that Colin loves going off-trail around the Arroyo Seco watershed, especially around Switzer's Camp area. I'm going to get together my pack and head up the Angeles Crest Highway now to look for his car. Check all turnou...

Re: cheap, tall boots?

Have you tried running in those Vibram or barefoot shoes? The material is rubber or smooth synthetics. I get the feeling that foxtails won't stick to them as much. You might have to be more careful though placing your feet in overgrowth.

Re: Rose Peak (5058')

The earliest account of the "survey party" story probably exists in one of the Wheeler reports from around 1875 or 1876. I've looked in Google Books but can't find it. According to this 1883 newspaper account, though, the survey party, led by Dr. F. Kampf, named it "Disappointment&quo...

Something happened to Fannie McKenzie on July 13, 1915. She was found in a dire state on the Wilson Trail above Sierra Madre. She ended up dying from a possible poisoning. I couldn't find a follow-up article after the coroner's report. You know what that means. Death by speculation. Screenshot_20230...

Re: Missing man near Millard (Albert Zisook)

i am curious, is radio silence after suicide SAR protocol, or media protocol? or..? There's a whole science devoted to reporting on suicide. You could google it and find websites and articles. I don't know what the various protocols are for various media and SAR groups. I'm sure it's a difficult si...

On July 12, 1899, Theodore Kretschmar experienced the biggest shock of his life. While walking around the mountains above Altadena, he grabbed a low-hanging wire. Unfortunately it was a live wire and he suffered a terrible electric burn. He survived but both of his arms had to be amputated. Screensh...

Re: Los Pinetos name history?

Another possibility is that "los pinetos" is a loanword from Italian. Though I don't know how much influence Italian culture had on Spanish. Spanish does have the family names of Pinedo, Pineda, and to a lesser extent, Pineto.

There's another one adjacent to Graveyard Canyon at the start of what eventually leads up to the Hawkins ridge systems. Cool trip. Any of you been up to Supercloud Hollow after a rain storm? Does it ever become an actual lake? Rose Peak (5058')

Peak 5058 sits along the ridge between Bear Canyon and Little Bear Canyon. In the early days of Switzer's Camp, it was known as Rose Peak, due to its coloration at sunset. Lizzie Miller describes the scene in her 1895 book, The True Way: Lizzie Miller - The True Way page 213.jpg Before visiting Rose...
