Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)
i recall them saying the last ping on his phone was only a mile from the car, two whole hours into the hike. that seems to match up with these findings? He was about 1.7 miles into the route, a half mile up the ridge from where you leave the motorway. It's where the ridge begins to climb and gets s...

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)
Could have been looking for the Bill Cull trail. When I hiked Clamshell and Monrovia in 2011, I must have done the top piece of this trail, because it was super sketchy and led over to the palm trees. They call it Four Palms now. I thought it was an animal track at the time, and was confused for a ...

Re: Deadwood Peak
Impressive. You did a hike just to get to the hike. Good place to have GPS. Thanks for the report and showing how it's done. I'm surprised that not many people want to visit a place called "Deadwood."

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)
Was the Clamshell Peak register checked for a signature? I don't know. According to a 2016 Lower Peaks Guide, the register on Clamshell is located in "a concrete hole with an iron lid next to a bush." The other issue is that the north side doesn't have the brush of the south side, so you ...

This map shows where the lost switchbacks hit the Clamshell Road. He was probably aiming for this area.Uncle Rico wrote: ↑Assuming he did this, what do you suppose is the entry point into BSA he was searching for?

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)
As SAR is scaling back operations, and nothing has been found, I'm compelled to share an important fact, of which SAR was made aware early on in this search effort. Colin had drafted an email to me but did not send it. His brother found it and sent it to me later. In the email titled "East Fork...

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)
Has it been determined whether he was carrying trail work tools or something else in that pack? Everything points to that conclusion. It's a near certainty that he was packing the regular tools. The LA Times article quoted someone saying that Colin "has been researching lost trails and lost wa...

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)
...has the old connector trail from Clamshell Road to East Fork , Santa Anita Canyon (and beyond) been checked? I gave them the old maps with the connector and the switchback routes. I've been told these have been checked. The problem is that these trails are either gone or hard to locate, thus dif...

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)
LA Times article . After a week of searching the steep slopes of the San Gabriel Mountains, rescue teams have found no sign of a 53-year-old hiker who was last seen walking toward a trailhead near Monrovia Canyon, police say. Colin Walker of South Pasadena parked his car and headed into the wilderne...

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)
As a periodic quest of his, is there a chance he did it again? I very much doubt it. The West Fork Road is open on weekends. He could have started from there to do Triplets via a known route, which is hard enough. Starting from Monrovia would almost certainly be beyond Colin's ability, unless he pl...

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)
Could Colin be in the clamshell canyon area, which is below the main trail nearest where he left his car? He might be interested in old cabin sites. It's possible, but we have strong evidence that points elsewhere. I believe SAR has been pursuing many ideas, including that he dropped below the main...

West Fork (Red Box to Shortcut and back)
I'm writing this while Colin Walker remains missing somewhere in the mountains above Monrovia. I have been providing information and theories to Sierra Madre SAR and Colin's brother, Ian. I think SAR is following the evidence, pursuing the best leads and searching the correct areas. Whether they can...

Re: Forgotten Anniversaries
You guessed it, the special truck ultimately got unstuck, and on July 21, 1907, the first load for the 60-inch telescope reached Mt. Wilson. Re: Forgotten Anniversaries
On July 19, 1907, a special truck tried to haul structural iron up the newly widened Wilson toll road. It carried the first load of material for constructing the 60-inch telescope, and the road had been widened specially for this special truck. Unfortunately the special truck got stuck in the soft s...

Re: cheap, tall boots?
Perhaps wrapping your normal shoes in medical gauze would do the trick. Then just remove the gauze afterward. Wouldn't running in cowboy boots be a sudden change for you?
