Re: Forgotten Anniversaries
On August 19, 1913, Asa Lund of Pomona rode his motorcycle to San Gabriel Canyon. He parked at Parker's Camp and said he would be back in a few hours. He grabbed his rifle and a few provisions and vanished into the wilderness, failing to return as promised. Screenshot_20230819-162748-893.png Screens...

Re: Allison Gulch Falls
Probably a whitethorn. I had one in my arm for a week or two before I finally got it out. Had to dig deep. Gave myself a little scar.

Re: Mount Humphreys, AZ
Thanks for the report. I used to have grandparents in Arizona and would visit frequently. I first tried Humphreys in 2012 from the Snowbowl side, but ran out of time and had to turn back. The next year, with more time, I went up from the Inner Basin in June. Despite a late afternoon start, I made th...

Thanks for taking one for the team. I think I'll stay out of that gulch. Maybe that's what a black widow bite does?

Re: Oakwilde mapping project
I'm thinking we could use the aerials to find coordinates for each building, then use the coordinates on the ground to flag probable locations and boundaries. It would help to know where we should clear brush and start poking around.

Re: Forgotten Anniversaries
On this day, August 10th, in 1901, Horace Seaver rode up the Mt. Wilson Trail on a burro. After a few miles he found himself above the canyon precipice, and a fearful idea entered his mind. He became obsessed with the thought of flinging himself into the abyss. Clinging to his burro, the animal safe...

Re: Probable Mt Baldy winter closures
Some SAR teams are police officers. Other SAR teams are volunteers affiliated with police. If the sheriff stops rescuing people, the search effort will be reduced by that many people and resources. But if a helicopter rescue is needed, maybe the USFS specially contracts for such service from the she...

Re: Probable Mt Baldy winter closures
"Unsafe" is not an objective standard for closing the area. Who will decide when conditions are "unsafe"? Unsafe to one person is safe to another. It depends on many factors like skill level, fitness and gear. The mountain should only be closed during official winter storm warnin...

Haha, Luana Ferreira was clearly high when she wrote that article. I mean, when she lamely stole the ideas from other sites like this one.

Here's a thread to express your surprise and/or anger over travesties like people using the name "Stoddard Falls" for the Baldy Waterslide. Screenshot_20230810-082420-177.png I discovered another travesty on Instagram, where they're referring to the West Fork Road as the "Devil's Cany...

Spectacular. Thanks for sharing. Along with all the water, I'm seeing more wildlife too. Just the other day a deer literally bolted past me on the Lone Tree Trail. I guess he was tired of waiting for me.

Crystal Lake & Soldier Creek
Cecelia and I escaped to Crystal Lake yesterday afternoon. We ate lunch at the Cafe, then found a shady spot by the lake to relax and watch the fishermen not catch anything. The contrasting blue and green water looked neat with a mountain backdrop. The lake level seemed nearly full. A funny-looking ...

Re: INTROS - New members, introduce yourself here!
i actually have done, with this photo at the ready, but it was a few years ago! i got confused at the time because all the (current) tubes i saw were pointing toward the city. but since you said “in the vicinity of” i surely just need to do a bit more poking around. i love a good treasure hunt. :) ...

Also, there is an interesting object behind the woman in the photo. It appears to be a wooden trough, perhaps--maybe for the mule that used to push a trolley car along that road. @Paul Ayers might know what it is.

Re: INTROS - New members, introduce yourself here!
Yeah, the tube direction fits either Lowe summit or Inspiration Point, but the background only fits Inspiration Point. I could provide reference photos, but I recommend hiking up there and trying to match the exact spot yourself. It's fun to look for the ridgelines and rock faces and stuff.

That's the Lowe firebreak that goes up the SW ridge. They're standing in the vicinity of Inspiration Point with Mt. Lowe in the background.Uncle Rico wrote: ↑Looks like there's a firebreak going up that ridge in the background. Anybody know where that is?

I recommend starting much earlier and taking a lot more water. Also, cover up completely to avoid heat exhaustion. It sounds counter-intuitive, but wearing light, long pants and sleeves protects your body from the sun burning you up.

colin above arroyo seco 1 full.jpg Colin and I shared a passion for music and the mountains. The map of the helicopter path supplied by Dima centers on the junction of Clamshell Peak and Four Palm Trails. The helicopter circled; I assume it was waiting for the ground team to bring the remains to where the helicopter could lower the basket for the remains to be loaded; I doubt there was any...

Here is a 1933 aerial showing essentially the same view as the ca. 2021. Note how the old trail used switchbacks to overcome the very steep portion of the firebreak trail used today. I know Colin well enough to know he would have found this aerial and be interested in the old trail. One possibility...

i recall them saying the last ping on his phone was only a mile from the car, two whole hours into the hike. that seems to match up with these findings? He was about 1.7 miles into the route, a half mile up the ridge from where you leave the motorway. It's where the ridge begins to climb and gets s...
