Re: Mt. Islip anniversary hike
I like that map on the second to last page of the thesis. " Old Cabin ", " ??? Lodge " and " YMCA Hut " caught my eye. Also I had not heard of Alexander Spring before...maybe I just have missed it on newer maps? Alexander Spring is on maps. Mrs. Jim Alexander built a h...

Re: Mt. Islip anniversary hike
I'm pretty sure Crystal Lake is on a fault which is what probably created it... I found a 1938 Master's thesis by John C. Wells. It looks like he was the first to argue for the existence of two faults within the basin. He calls them Crystal Lake Fault and Soldier Creek Fault. As against the prior g...

Bummed I missed out on the arguing couple. Those are my favorite wilderness sounds. "I got into an argument with a girlfriend inside of a tent. That's a bad place for an argument, because then I tried to walk out, and slammed the flap. How are you supposed to express your anger in this situati...

Re: Mt. Islip anniversary hike
Oh yeah? The topo has it sticking up above the 8000 contour. I'll just set it to an even 8k I guess It's under 8000 on the newer, computer-generated USGS maps. But it's over 8000 on the 1995 version, which CalTopo uses for the "Scanned Topos" map. We're in that middle era where people sti...

Found this modest pile o' rocks on Islip Ridge. Nothing fancy. Just a good, old-fashioned cairn. Not too small, not too big, and probably completely unnecessary.

Palos Verdes Walks
Last week I noticed that Ryan would be rolling through Palos Verdes during the Pacific Coast Bike Race. I've been meaning to walk around that place, so I combined a little cheerleading with a little exploring. First I checked out the Vicente Bluffs Reserve. It has a nice picnic area above the cliffs...

Mt. Islip anniversary hike
Jeff, Nate, Cecelia and I celebrated the forum's sixteenth birthday by hiking to Mt. Islip on Sunday and eating grilled cheese sandwiches on the peak. The celebration actually started on Saturday. Jeff, Cecelia and I camped at Crystal Lake, cooked hot dogs, drank alcoholic beverages, enjoyed a camp ...

Thanks for the report, and congratulations on the win. That's pretty cool how people let you sleep in their house. If you do the coast-to-coast race, avoid Nebraska, it's kind of boring.

Re: The San Gabriel Mountains geographical centroid
How would one generate "objective, logical boundaries" of the San Gabes? The Gabes were created from activity along certain faults that form the borders of the uplifted block of earth. I'd start by identifying and tracing these faults. I quickly found the below map, but you'd have to find...

Still closed between Red Box and Vincent Gap. I predict that by 2030 we'll be back to 1930 road conditions.

Re: The San Gabriel Mountains geographical centroid
"It is a primarily topographical approach" While we're being nerds, the type of centroid you've calculated seems more geometric than geological or topographical. Essentially you subjectively drew a geometric shape resembling the 2D outline of the Gabes. With objective, logical boundaries y...

Re: The San Gabriel Mountains geographical centroid
That would be awesome if the volume centroid were under Crystal Lake and we had to dig a tunnel to it. We might finally solve the mystery of how the lake drains through the bedrock.

Let's aim for an 8:00 AM start. It's approximately 6-7 miles to the summit with 2750' gain. We can start from the Lake parking lot and take Lost Ridge Trail to Big Cienega Trail to Islip Ridge Trail to the summit, then descend the Islip Ridge Trail all the way back to the lake.

Is Mama taking a dump and baby is like WTF? They had just scrambled off the trail to get away from me, and were looking back, waiting for me to leave so they could hop back on the trail. Mama has that look, like, "Any day now, dipshit. Move along, dork." And baby is all, "You tell'em...
