Re: Brown Mountain: 09-11-2011

Yeah, that 800' back up to the road is awful. Many years ago, I hiked loop from Red Box thru Switzers thru Bear Canyon to the Mt. Lowe Road, then up over San Gabriel Peak and back to Red Box. It was much hotter than expected, and I ran out of water on the climb out of the canyon. Then that 800' brok...

Single serving Peanut Butter

While at Fresh & Easy this morning, I discovered it sells peanut butter in single serving containers. They're 2 oz each. Definitely on my grocery list for backpacking now.

Re: Speaking of mt. bikes & hiking trails

In the Santa Monica Mountatins, where horses, hikers, and bikers are allowed on the trails, the signs indicate hikers and bikers yield to horses, and bikers yield to hikers.

Re: PHOTOS - Post or link to pictures!

I foolin' around on this archive of old postcards, and noticed it has an entire section about the Mt. Lowe Railroad. I think they're really interesting, so I figured I'd share them with the board.

Re: Pacific Crest Trail (Cajon - Little Jimmy - Soledad)

I'm very lazy when it comes to uploading my photos. Fortunately, the pictures from my overnight at Little Jimmy about two years ago just happen to be available here: http://cmachler.smugmug.com/gallery/176 ... 4113_3XjsC . Little Jimmy is definitely my favorite trail camp in the San Gabriels. And th...

Re: Mt. Waterman Trails (from Buckhorn or Three Points)

I think Waterman was open for four or five weekend this year. Apparently, they're replacing/repairing a lot of the infrastructure.

There was an article about just this subject in Backpacker maybe four years ago. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Re: Mt. Waterman Trails (from Buckhorn or Three Points)

According to the Waterman ski area's website, they're closed for the season, which I'm assuming is due to poor snow coverage.

Re: Mt Waterman open???

Waterman has a new website at http://www.skiwaterman.com/

It's full of the usual ski resort bravado and boasting, but it also this weekend as the opening date.

Re: quick overnight backpacking trips

Little Jimmy campground is about two miles from Islip Saddle. Water is always flowing at Little Jimmy spring about a quarter-mile away from the campground. You can also try the campgrounds along the West Fork of the San Gabriel River accessed from Red Box. I think the first one is Valley Forge, and ...
