Re: The Verdugo Cattery
Can the Verdugo mountains really support that many cats? How long until one or more are forced to leave? I'm wondering if any will make it east to the San Rafael Hills - when you're on top of them, the Verdugo mountains don't look that far, but it really is a number of miles through a city.

Re: Winter Boots
I think I'll just accept the fact I'm better off with two pairs of boots (or more), so is there a current "everyone's favorite" boot that would be appropriate for the conditions typical of the San Gabriels in the winter (ie doesn't need to be the warmest boot in the world)? The Hi-Tec Alti...

Re: Winter Boots
My wife and I have been hiking for years but I'm not really into accessories, so we don't even have hiking boots. I hike in skate shoes, and she wears running shoes. I'm starting to realize that hiking boots would be very nice, especially when walking over sharp rocky areas for any period of time (p...

Re: SR-39 (San Gabriel Canyon Road)
I don't know, if you walk down hwy 39 you get the impression the mountains will restore it to its natural state in not too much time - the rock slides appear to be near constant.

Get a bigger dog to protect the cat and little dog from coyotes.

Re: Misc. News (Archive)
If I had a group of 100 hikers in front of me on a trail, I think I'd just turn around. It's hard enough to get by a group of 8 people, but 100 just wouldn't be possible.

A man falls to his death in Eaton Canyon:

I've never been to the actual falls, I always go up the toll road instead, but I thought the only danger on that hike was if you try and use the use trail to go up to the other falls.

Re: Any good hikes close to Bakersfield?
Thanks for all the suggestions, it looks like everything is at least a 45 min - 1hr drive. Probably not doable after work, but definitely a lot of good hikes to check out on the weekend.

Re: Homebrewing SGM-style
I know it doesn't sound good but I go in phases where I really like apfelwein. It's much drier than your typical apple cider, and incredibly easy to brew. My only complaint is I used too much sugar to carbonate the bottles I've been aging, and it's a little too fizzy to drink. Other than that, it's ...

Any good hikes close to Bakersfield?
I'm used to living in the foothills of the San Gabriels (about 100 yards away from the Cherry Canyon hike in La Canada), but now I work in Bakersfield so I live up here from Monday - Friday. Between that and the summer heat I've been getting out of hiking shape, so my goal is to start finding some n...
