Re: Cougar Encounter in Eaton Canyon 8:40PM 6/29/12
Sage, it seems to me the first noise you heard may have been a deer. Cougar was hunting, then you got between it and the deer it was paying attention to. It does surprise me too that the cougar was noisy, but those oak leaves are tough to be stealthy on. They can definitely do it if they have to th...

Re: Cougar Encounter in Eaton Canyon 8:40PM 6/29/12
Didn't retreat, just stood there for 5 minutes throwing crap at it until it left. I went to the loo and made sure the door was shut (cinderblock construction with solid, latching door and roof). When I came out I just kept my eyes open and listened for sounds, but he cougar was no where to be found...

Re: Cougar Encounter in Eaton Canyon 8:40PM 6/29/12
Yeah, I was shocked that it would make so much noise. When I went back this morning I noticed the ground was completely covered in layers of noisy oak leaves.

Re: Cougar Encounter in Eaton Canyon 8:40PM 6/29/12
I just had to go back today and although I only had a couple of minutes to look around I found two questionable marks on a tree the cougar walked by.
I don't know.. What do you think?

Re: Cougar Encounter in Eaton Canyon 8:40PM 6/29/12
It was a pretty cool experience and I'm glad to have seen it I just wish it was brighter out. We didn't run but rather walked out of there at a steady pace screaming at it. We didn't have flashlights and just wanted to get out of there . Nice! How long did you stand your ground before retreati...

Cougar Encounter in Eaton Canyon 8:40PM 6/29/12
Today was by far the craziest day I've ever experienced in the mountains. I saw a cougar in the lower section of Eaton Canyon. It all started when me and my buddy descended from Altadena and Midwick Dr. around 7:00PM. We weren't prepared for a hike and just decided to stick to the lower part of Eato...

Re: Altadena Bears 2012-05-03
Actually, a few do hibernate but it tends to be short. If I remember correctly, observations of collared bears support this idea. After a quick search in Activity patterns of urban American black bears in the San Gabriel Mountains of southern California By Amy J. Lyons I have come to the conclusion...

Re: Altadena Bears 2012-05-03
"They're waking up from their winter hibernation," explained a Fish and Game representative to CBS2. "We had a warm spell, I believe, about a week ago, and that really brought them out."
Since when do bears hibernate in the San Gabriels?!? Nonsense!!!

Re: Mountain lion cuts a switchback
I've wondered about cougars and how they would react to loud human noises such as helicopters and sirens but I never thought I'd see it. Great video.

Re: What animal would do this?
Awesome, I didn't know that about coyotes or bobcats.
And I had a feeling it was a rabbit since I saw one a short distance up the road. Reminded me of the CM video of the bobcat with a rabbit in it's mouth.
Thanks guys!

I've been looking for footage of black bears in Chantry for a while now so thanks for the videos PackerGreg. And what's the story behind the bear in the wheel barrel?

Re: Hoegee campground wildlife
 Jesus! I haven't realized how many people are packing heat on the trails. A gun isn't necessary. I frequent Chantry and all of my encounters with bears have been non-threatening and easily deflected with loud noise. My first encounter was at the picnic tables by the parking lot/pack station....

Re: Mountain Lion Track?
Hey Matt thank you so much for your thoughts! I was actually attracted to this track for three reasons #1 the location It was on an "animal trail" that was impassable for a human to walk through(at least easily. There was a bush that only allowed about 3-4 feet of clearance- I had to crawl...
