Re: Mendenhall Ridge Road and Burma Road Update
Burma had a big slide dating from the 22-23 winter. They must be serious about maintaining that if its been repaired by bulldozer. Maybe because of the power line access?
I am sure that is the reason and the fires precipitated the work which they hadn't done for a while. They don't want another ...

Mendenhall Ridge Road and Burma Road Update
I finally did The Pinnacle today and both the Mendenhall and Burma roads have been dozed and are completely cleared. I don't know how far up Mendenhall has been dozed but it looks like it is at least to the turnoff for the peak. The work may be ongoing as I could still see the dozer's tracks on the ...

Re: Caswell BM and Peak 3,941
Thanks for the report. Did you start in the Hungry Valley OHV area? Any idea if the Post fire closure is still a thing? Can we go towards Alamo Mtn?
I started from the east side of the freeway. Hungry Valley is on the west. The have opened the western section of Hungry Valley which wasn't ...

Caswell BM and Peak 3,941
Unfortunately we have had a lot of fires over the last six months but they have given the hiker an opportunity to get to places that may have been difficult in the past. Case in point the hike I did today. I was unsure if after the Gorman fire whether ridges had been cleared or not but went up there ...

Re: Oat Mtn from Santa Clarita Valley - birthday revenge
I feel kind of persecuted in this write-up, like I should've done something but didn't. I have been to the top of Oat Mountain at least five times and have become friends with some of the cows do I get some credit?

Re: West Ridge to Los Pinetos Peak
There should be a contest for ugliest post-fire hike. Winner receives the ugliest beanie I've found on the trails.
This hike without a fire is ugly as sin. The first mile is on mainly paved road following the freeway with tons of trash. Then you get a chance to hike through a maze of ...

West Ridge to Los Pinetos Peak
A large firebreak has been recreated just south of the Fremont BM that accesses the ridge and continues all the way to the Los Pinetos fire road. Top Hat peak AKA Peak 3,119 burned and the register is gone. The Sylmar fire got to the top of this ridge in a couple of places but did not go over. The ...

Townsend Peak & BM 2,658
I decided this Sunday to continue my exploration of the upper Canton Canyon trails. This time I decided to enter via the top of the canyon from Templin Highway. The trail starts very inauspiciously from the side of the 5 freeway. The fire road up to Townsend used to be driveable by car but now the ...

It is a provisional peak and gets confused with Pop Top frequently, very few people go up there.

Re: Condor Peak attempt via Trail Canyon
I was up there yesterday via the regular route and that trail is in great shape all the way to Condor so no worries there. Bikers have been using the route again. The trail is getting more use now that so much of the forest is closed. I passed three solo hikers and one large group, typically I see ...

Re: Condor Peak attempt via Trail Canyon
Has anyone been to the upper part of this canyon recently? I did it a while ago without looking at a map or anything and I remember it being pretty bad. I was recently looking at parts of Google Maps and it seems like some sections of the trail linking Condor Peak to Trail Canyon Falls may be ...

The ANF should become a museum piece, where you can observe it from a far and tell museum-goers that back in the day people used to actually hike it.

Re: Peaks 3,765, 4278, and 4,122
Cool, remote area!
Your elevations maybe don't match up with the USGS scan on Caltopo(?) but I see the area you were in based on other place names you mention.
The person who put it up on Peakbagger used his GPS for the measurements, you can see the location of the peaks there.
The hike ...

Peaks 3,765, 4278, and 4,122
I have been interested in the old fire road that heads north from the saddle that takes you up to Warm Springs Mountain for a while. I just haven't had a reason to go up there, looking at Peakbagger I noticed three peaks that were identified and decided to give it a shot. It was going to be a bit of ...

Re: Stone Canyon Trail to Lukens Update
Went up yesterday and yowzer, the recent trail work done is awesome. The trail is back to being in the shape it was 20 years ago. It may actually be better then before in certain areas. There were a couple of problem areas on the trail notably when you first left Stone, when you entered the canyon ...

Re: Mount Baldy closed until December 2025?
They’re closed because they “provide access to other trails that did burn,” she wrote.
So based on that logic, everything needs to be closed when a fire occurs as all the trails eventually connect. I would say PCT down in SoCal should close after a fire wrecks the trail up in Oregon. It is all ...

The Moon did get moved, it was that very obvious round bump you climb steeply that is shaped like the moon. Oh well more revisionist history.

Re: Exploring Canton Canyon
Hadn't seen this write-up, it was easier going up there now without everything flowering. Now I can feel comfortable checking out the compound, when I go up there next time, thanks. The topos show a trail climbing from just before the compound through an obvious canyon which was the one I started up.

Exploring Canton Canyon
My fitness is moving along quite nicely so I decided on some possible xcountry exploration. I had noticed that there were a bunch of old trails that had existed between the 5 and Lake Piru. This area is pocketed with private properties in the middle of the National Forest but the trails definitely ...

Re: Icehouse to Fontana San Gabriels Linkup
The last couple of miles to Joe Elliot are in poor shape, there is a fellow who has been trying to get a group up there to fix it but it sounds all doable and if worse comes to worse you can xcountry much of it. Your exit strategy is more problematic, that old fire road is over grown and I don't ...

Peaks 7,022 and 6,994-Chumash Wilderness
One of my new things is to decide to do a hike and have multiple options as far as what I am going to do during the hike. The original thought of this hike was to get to a viewpoint of the Cuyama Badlands. Much of this has been closed by the Forest Service since they don't want to fix the road that ...
