Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions

I am cleansing my possessions of relics. In the process, I game across a gem: A photo of Wilson Harvey and RJ Secor (pre accident) at the Baldy ski hut. They are with Jim Hargear, an office colleague of mine who introduced me to this extraordinary mountain, and who is responsible for my meeting Will...

Perseids anyone?

I'm heading up after 10:00, just not sure where, yet. Have to go up via Big T, so I'll probably just put a tarp down somewhere. Anybody heading up? Any suggestions as to primo viewing? In the past, I've hung out in the parking lot at Red Box. Don't think that will cut it this year with the detour....

Register Ridge with a Norma Sighting

Went up RR with my long time CA hiking/climbing/skiing bud, Will. Started late, at 5:00, and was on top after several hydration, one sustenance and one rock balancing break by 8:00. Ran into So.BayMark from the WPSMB at the cutoff to RR, but he didn't have enough water to join us. Hung out at what w...

There has been a confirmed Norma sighting on Mt. Baldy this morning.

Re: Bear Flat Trail (Baldy Village)

It's a great route, but it can be more humid and muggy (especially early on) than the higher elevation trailheads. So it's a good idea to bring extra water along -- particularly this time of year.

Re: Shin's 200th Baldy Summit

Thanks, James. But I suspect it was blown off it's pedestal in short order, probably before Ellen arrived. I do know that Jim (who passed me) got to see it, though. It was precariously placed to say the least. I "apprenticed" many, many, years ago with the only sculptor to have subsequentl...

Re: Baldy -North Backbone Trail-

It's a real nice way to ascend Baldy. I always come away with an entirely different perspective on the range.
I don't get to go this way often enough, unfortunately. Logistics frequently become a major element of the equation.

Shin's 200th Baldy Summit

While the Aetherians were gathering at Harwood, Shin Nimura was completing his 200th Baldy summit (over just 6 1/2 years)! A crowd was eagerly awaiting his arrival at the summit, and had already done some heavy lifting in preparation: http://lh4.ggpht.com/_UWhgUyvBB7g/TEv89uFeNrI/AAAAAAAAKJ4/hzzTu2j...

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

I went for a bike ride up Big T yesterday. Got too late of a start after watching the Tour, and the heat was on. I saw a reading on my bike thermometer of 116 at one point, and it was consistently over 100. But here's an update on the roads: Lower Big T from Mt. Gleason to before the Angeles Forest ...

Maybe we need to add R or X to the local class 1 and 2 hiking grades to better describe the probability that Taco would be a rock magnet --
or perhaps to indicate the possibility of being ambushed by rent a ninjas.....
