It's not in the same league as some of the others that have been posted, but I think this audience will appreciate one from the early days of digital photography:

I'm not looking at you!
But I must say that I have the utmost respect for Ian and his talent.
I chose his avatar because I named my bicycle after his steed in LOTR.
At the risk of being redundant, I'm not looking at you. You're so vain......

Re: 20080502-03 San Gorgonio NUMBA THREE
Not wanting to give you too much beta, my limited experience (1st solo winter trip in CA) was that the route to the Jumpoff is quite rotten & therefore scary in places....(I missed the turnoff to Vivian Creek and went exploring.) I recall being miserable, probably because I packed in both shoes ...

Nice! Wish I still had my old Tuas....
The N side was pretty crusty last w/e, btw. We considered round tripping it, but the corn was just perfect in the bowl....![Twisted Evil ](./images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif)

FWIW, I've experienced sudden whiteout conditions at several locations/elevations on the mountain -- and on more than a few occasions.

You came clean fast! I think you have a good grasp of some of the challenges of winter day hiking. I experienced some of what you did when I took a "snow-newbie" with me to San Gorgonio's Dry Lake on Sat. He had a blast, btw. Hadn't been there since 6th grade. A totally different exp...

Re: What's a good way to measure hiking performance?
As a comparison -- and more realistic IMHO for mere mortals -- is the formula by Paul Richins used in his book "50 Classic Backcountry Ski and Snowboard Summits": Time in hours = (distance hiked in miles/2 MPH) + (elevation gain in feet/1000 feet per hour). Note that this formula "ass...

There is a summit register now in a tin can under a rock cluster near the SE highpoint.
If there really is no GS marker, guess we'll just have to demand the resignation of the Secretary of the Interior!

I was up there on Sun. but couldn't locate the Geological Service's summit marker. Can anyone tell me were it might be, please?
