Yeah right! Nothing on it but some rotten snow. Next winter... if a "pure" approach is in order, it'll be ludicrous. Probably gonna do something a tad easier to get to it. But yeah, SEF. something like this perhaps? 8) https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/photobucket/img/album...

Re: Big packs

I had my eye on an Osprey last year but ended up buying a Gregory instead (after fitting the two packs in the store with weight/bulk stuffers). The Gregory fit my tall frame better with weight bearing nicely on my hips. The Osprey has a very comfortable and customizable belt, but was too top shifty ...

Re: 20080502-03 San Gorgonio NUMBA THREE

In all my years of hiking, I have never, ever seen a ranger in any SoCal trail. Did they say why they were there? Were they checking permits? They never asked for permits and said they were checking the 'conditions of the trails' and nodded us on into neve penetente/bushwacking misery down below Ma...

It would be nice to have an igloo or two at one's disposal at, say, Dry Lake. Maybe use the forums to sign up to use them. Speaking of Dry Lake, again, ... Kathy Wing got a pic of one there at the end of - March (time flies): https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/kathywing.smugmug.com/photos/26955...

Déjà vu, the pictures you have look just like a scene 20 years ago below Dry Lake. Dry Lake it was, last December 9th. Happy Birthday Rick; Cheers! :D Question on the snowstorm topic - does an igloo vent exhaust gas at the peak? What about cooking from the vestibule of a tent in a storm, that's wha...

I remember the arclite fireball while Bert was cleaning/priming or whatever he was doing to his MSR white-gas stove on top of Harwood, December 15th.
Momentary flashburn. Almost melted his vestibule, hehe ..

Not particularly impressed with white-gas stoves for applications is SoCal.

Re: Where the heck is Mt Chapman in relation to Timber Mountain?

The backbone from the notch to the summit -is barely a spur of a spine in comparison to the spine going up Pine Mountain from Wrightwood enroute to Baldy. On the Harwood portion of the BP one would have difficulty falling in summer conditions. Granted, but I thought that route was called the 'North...
