a slide in baldy bowl

Heads up. A friend reported an avy in the bowl today. He started it but no one got hurt. He's an experienced skier and says it was big enough to bury people. Watch out for all that melting snow on our local mountains.

Re: How to ice-axe self arrest

Unless I'm roped in, I use a wrist leash for my axe. I make the leash just long enough that I can switch hands without removing the leash from the wrist. It doesn't have to very long at all. Since I'm right-handed, the leash is on the left wrist (gets in the way less often). As others have pointed o...

winter campgrounds near Wrightwood and Big Bear

I'm looking for places to spend nights near the ski resorts. I sleep in the back of my car (4x4), don't need running water, but a toilet would be nice. Free or park service fee only, of course. Anyone camped at Table Mountain, Appletree, Peavine, or Lake in winter? Any suggestion for Big Bear area? ...

Re: looking for a practice ski slope

Thanks for the good suggestions. I in fact was up on Pinos last weekend; very nice gentle slopes near the summit. The snow on the north facing slopes were still great, powdery; others were crusty, excellent for face planting if you are into that. The road was open all the way up to the upper parking...

looking for a practice ski slope

I'm a beginner skier and looking for a place to practice telemark turns. More specifically, a very gentle slope with a nice runout, preferrably in SG (but SB or SJ is okay), where I don't have to worry about mowing anyone down on weekends. Since I use waxless Nordic skis, and need workout anyways, I...

Re: Hiking Shoes

I would not recommend Camp 4. Design of the tongue near the toebox allows too much dirt and small pebbles to accumulate there. I found that dirt eventually gets inside the shoes. I do like the sticky rubber and the heel support, so will be looking to buy one of Five Ten's other approach/scrambling s...

The only bummer is I'm not sure if you can buy a second vehicle pass with it. I bought the pass about a month ago, and the lady at the Arcadia FS office told me that the sticker that comes with the pass can be used as a second vehicle Adventure Pass (just stick it on the windshield). I have not con...

I was in Escalante NP during the July 4th weekend (I was also there during the last Christmas/New Year). It is not as well know as Zion or Bryce, but definitely worth a visit. Very few people, but many hikes and slot canyons, including several non-technical ones fun for all. Also nearby is Paria Can...

I've found even 100% DEET useless in some places, like the Sierra. But treating my clothing/hat/socks/bandana with permithrin works great; not only against mosquitoes, but ticks as well. Available at REI.

Re: Help get rid of the Adventure Pass!

I for one certainly wouldn't mind chipping in an extra buck or two but $80 for a National Parks Pass and another $30 for an Adventure Pass and then another $15 or $20 for certain state parks??? Unless they changed the rule within the last year, a National Parks Pass also works as an Adventure Pass....

Hi. My waist is 33.5-34, and I couldn't tighten the harness enough to keep it from slipping down when I had some weight hanging off it (which is why I am selling it). And that was with fleece pants under goretex pants. I would say that at 35, you are at the minimum of the harness. Shoot. I'll hafta ...

Re: Help get rid of the Adventure Pass!

Sadly, our forests are underfunded. I am a huge user of the local forests and don't mind kicking in a few bucks to help the Angeles and San Bernardino NFs. The reality is that the users will have to shoulder more of the burden of funding our open spaces. I agree. At least with these specific "...

Yesterday, 4/27, I was hurrying back down the Bear Canyon trail. About 100 yards past Bear Flat creek, around 5pm, I heard a strange sound and heard some tree branches moving very loudly. I figured that two fat squirrels were fighting in the trees, and took a quick look up at the branches right abov...

Re: Lighters with piezo-electric ignition

I had trouble lighting my JetBoil with its piezo igniter; higher the altitude, more gas I had to release to light. And often required many "clicks". Tried putting in a new igniter; didn't help. Due to too little oxygen supposedly. So I removed the igniter and now just use a Bic lighter. Wo...

I've used a cannister stove (Jetboil) at 19.2k' below 10F, and it performed just as well as at sea level. . The boiling time must have taken longer at low atmospheric pressures. Actually, it's the opposite I believe. Lower atmospheric pressure means the water boils at a lower temperature; i.e., sho...

I've used a cannister stove (Jetboil) at 19.2k' below 10F, and it performed just as well as at sea level. As someone mentioned above, the key is to keep the cannister from getting cold as the fuel pressure drops. I did this with a home-made windshield that fit tightly around the stove; to keep some ...

This is the parking pass I used while living in Washington state. Good for most, if not all, of Oregon as well:

Also, I would recommend Mnt. Adams in Washington. All you need for the South Spur route is basic crampon and ice axe skills.

Too late to give Gumby a report (I was on it Saturday morning), but I do have a question for those who have been on Baldy's summit during Santa Ana winds. No doubt windy, but how is the temperature?
