Re: ODC vs. Sierra Club

I have never been on a Sierra Club or ODC hike, but I have encountered quite a few of both and believe that they both do great things. I have organized, and otherwise participated in, some informal group hikes using message boards like this one. I think that it is important that, at the outset, ever...

Re: Hikers body recovered from Mt Wilson

I like that loop too. I am also having trouble recalling any 1000' chutes, but I have never done that route in winter, when such things tend to stir up one's self-preservation instinct. Besides, it doesn't take a 1000' fall in an icy chute to kill a person. It must have been pretty high up on the as...

Jim -- my son came across that route when running in Haines Canyon. He talked it up, so he and I did Lukens that wat one day after a storm a few years ago. We hit snow at about 4500', then it started raining. We came down Haines Canyon pretty well soaked. Nice outing overall, though. 8)

Re: Tour de Verdugo 10-27-07

I got back form a trip last week and had to stick near home. (Given some of the events of the weekend in the mountains, that may have been a good thing.) Yesterday, I did manage to do about half of the loop reported in this thread -- up the Viper Trail and down Whiting Woods Fire Road. Except for a ...

Re: Avalanches in Wrightwood area

I certainly agree that a real avalanche report would be of great interest. I think we'd all like to learn from tragic events like these and more detailed information would really help. Also, to be fair, I looked at a broader range of media coverage and have to agree that a lot of it was pretty bad. ...

Re: Avalanches in Wrightwood area

In reading the news coverage, mostly in the LA Times, I did not get the impression that the victims of the avalanches (plural) were doing anything "insanely risky." Out of bounds skiing was mentioned, of course, but so was the fact that the victims were very experienced. I make no claim to...

Anyone making plans for enjoying the large quantities of fresh snow in the near future should keep in mind the liklihood of avalanches.

Here is a story about a serious one at Mountain High (Wrightwood area) -- 3 people rescued, 1 missing. More here.

It could be a lot worse! Imagine being a major POTUS candidate and saying in public that you heard a speech by the German President Vladimir Putin. It happened just yesterday. (I won't name the candidate since this is not a political board -- it was presumably just an embarrassing slip anyway.)

There are many ways to one up on historical lore. Movies like Animal House are of immense value in that department. "Over? Did you say over? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the German's bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! And it ain't over now! Cause when the going gets tough....

Rte. 39 is passable on bicycle and on foot. I know prople who have ridden it. In 2005, my son and I did Mt. Islip from Islip Saddle during the winter. He talked me into bushwacking down to Rte. 39. We then walked about 2 miles on the road back to the saddle. I mention that episode because we saw a g...

Yeah, I'm not betting on it, just hoping. Route 39 would be nice as well, but that' hasn't been touched much since what, 1968? Rte. 39 went out in the winter of 1969, which was a messy one. I was living in Azusa at the time and, in addition to what was going on in the Crystal Lake area, and there w...

One would be hard-pressed to follow the precise Ski Hut Trail above the Hut right now, but there are many tracks in the snow. Some go through the woods near the trail and some go up the open part of the Bowl. Like Jim, I owuld urge caution about going alone. However, assuming decent snow conditions ...

Baldy via Ski Hut Trail 1-12-08

I went up Mt. Baldy via the Ski Hut trail today. I didn't get started until nearly 10, and there were quite a few people on the trail, not to mention a huge number of cars at Manker Flat. This suggested that the hardest part of the trip would be the drive down the hill in the afternoon. That turned ...
