Re: SR-39 (San Gabriel Canyon Road)

How is opening the end of the 39 really going to add business to Azusa again? People will flock from Azusa to the Starbucks that will go in next to the restroom at Islip Saddle. But, to get there they will want to fill up at the Starbucks on Foothill near Azusa Ave. That will be a boost to the loca...

Baldy Bear Flat 12-27-11

I have not seen a lot of Baldy reports lately. I did Baldy today with my son, heading up via Bear Flat and coming down via the Ski Hut. As people know form the conditions thread, or from seeing the mountain from afar, there is hardly any snow.

Re: Great training hike-Verdugos

I live up against the Verdugos and have done that loop a few times. You described it very well. I occasionally hike to the ridge fire road starting at the top of Mesa Lila Rd., just to the east of Whiting Woods. A lot of it is basically straight up a fire break, which provides a good uphill workout ...

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

So, no need for snowshoes? There is definitely no need for snowshoes at this point. I don't have microspikes either... possible to do? Want to do BAden Powell or similar this Sunday since has not rained/snowed in weeks. Any chance of doing w/out the spikes? Someone else will have to comment on Bade...

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

Wow, that seems blazing fast. I've never hiked Baldy so I don't have a great feel for how long the RT hike usually takes, but I had planned for about double your time. I'm guessing you're an exceptionally strong hiker and that most normal human beings would be in the 7-8 hours. Is that accurate? Do...

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

I was up via the Ski Hut on Friday, December 2. The only real snow is beyond the Hut and before the ridge. Microspkies made it easier over that stretch.

11th Baldy of 2011 on 11-11-11

I did my 11th Mt. Baldy hike of 2011 on 11-11-11. There was some snow and ice above the Ski Hut, the remains of the recent storm, but it is still a bit early for real winter conditions. It was quite blustery on top and seasonably cold at 38 degrees. It was a good day for a two minute visit. Pix

Yeah, for more white, I guess we need to wait for another round of snow. On the other hand, I was totally unprepared for snow, so the conditions were not much to complain about.

It is a real challenge to maintain a flag on top of Baldy -- the wind is pretty relentless.

Baldy Bear Flat 10-7-11

I went up Baldy and back today from Baldy Village with Jay Olsen. There is nothing extraordinary about that, but I have not posted a trip report in a while and felt like... well... why not?

Re: When "You're Looking GOOD" Might Not Be a Complime

A lot of people don't know this, but it's easy to tame a mountain lion. If you find yourself in a situation with one, all you need to do is talk sweetly to it like it's a baby, and scratch it under the chin or behind the ears. You can trust this advice, because I am an expert, and wrote this on the...

Re: Highest altitude for rattlesnakes?

I ran into one near the top of Register Ridge. Very early in the morning, very chilly. It wasn't moving, just solar charging. I did Baldy via Register Ridge today. I saw a rattlesnake before the falls -- no big surprise at 6000'. However, as I approached the intersection of the Register Ridge use t...

I only went up as far as Three Points. I had limited time and did about 8 miles on the PCT. I hope they managed to open the rest of the 2 past Eagles Roost -- I got stuck there a few weeks ago.

The actually opened the damned thing today. I went up Tujunga Canyon Rd. because the Crest was not going to open from La Canada until after a ceremony at 10 AM. Bit I did drive down all the way in the afternoon. Lots of new pavement.

Thanks for the post. I was wondering about that section. Does that section take off just outta Sturde? Yes. It's a well-marked intersection on the right as you head up. Can you catch the Rim Trail from Newcs Pass? Yes, that's what I did, except that I wandered up under the interferometer tubes at t...

It's finally legal to nuke 'em

Newcomb Pass is not so terribly special, but I was unhappy that it had been closed since the Station Fire in 2009 because, among other things, it offers some nice extra distance on Mt. Wilson hikes from Chantry Flat. It finally opened this week, so I gave it a try. The trail is in surprisingly good ...
