Re: Iron Mountain 6/11/09

Are you saying you cache some water at the saddle for your trip back down? Good tip! Thanks! :) Yeah, it is nice to avoid hauling those extra couple of pounds up that steep hill for nothing. It encourages taking plenty of water and having plenty for those last few miles on the way back. Have a grea...

Re: Iron Mountain 6/11/09

Me and a friend are going for our first Iron Mountain summit on Thursday. I have reviewed some past trip reports and referenced Robinsons trails of the Angeles. Anyone have any tips for a couple of boots? 8) Pick a cool Thursday! Actually, if this gloomy weather holds, you should be pretty happy. :...

Re: Iron Mountain 6-5-09

We did Iron on 5/16/09 Coming back down was so hot. Each one of the 2 of us brought 6 liter of water and drank it all. To me, it sounds kinda funny when you say ....You took your first sip of water at the summit. It was a different experience from the usual. Several years ago, we did Iron Mountain ...

It was a great day for that trip. I didn't take my first sip of water until we reached the top. I've never had that happen before in June! My only regret was... no gloves! :D

Iron Mountain 6-5-09

Eric and I did Iron Mountain from Heaton Flat on a gloomy June day. Temperatures were in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. With the wind on top, it was cold enough to numb hands and motivate an early departure for home. Visibility varied a lot, but it was definitely very low on top. The trail is somewhat overg...

Re: 10 Peaks in Baldy area

Does anyone know, off hand, the total mileage and elevation gain/loss for Baldy Village Trail, down Icehouse- bagging 10 peaks from West Baldy to Ontario? There are many variations of that hike so one is not sure which 10 peaks you mean. I have heard of people doing anywhere from 6 - 13. The 9 peak...

Casa Maya is on 38, a couple of blocks past A&W, on the right as you head downhill.

Re: Baldy 5-23-09

Just curious, where did Eric secure his bike? I believe that he locked it to a tree, although a less visible one than in the picture I took of someone else's bike. I would ask him but I am on a non-mountaineering expedition in Kansas at the moment. He left his sleeping bag, etc. with Mike at the sn...

Re: Want to stay healthy? DON'T EAT THIS

I think that most people on all sides of any issue get their information from a variety of sources that they trust. These may include Fox News, the Sierra Club, etc. Some may be good sources, some not so good. My belief (based on an unscientific sampling of people who saw the movie) is that people w...

Re: Want to stay healthy? DON'T EAT THIS

And another thing ( side rant :) ) , same problem relates with people's opinions on a whole range of topics; we get our news from specific media entities that could certainly have bias on the topic, as well as dumb down the concepts, so we end up not thinking for ourselves. Take the issue of global...

Re: Want to stay healthy? DON'T EAT THIS

The calorie figure I used earlier was certainly low-ball. According to UN statistics , the average American (in 2001-2003) consumed 3770 calories. (That's enough to fuel a lot of hiking!) That included about 115 g of protein (460 Calories) and 155 g fat (1395 Calories), so carbohydrates, including s...

Re: Want to stay healthy? DON'T EAT THIS

The 80% thing is for the AVERAGE American. Most of us tough, fit hikers are NOT the average! You know that! It's highly possible to get 1600 calories/day from foods containing HFCS. It is in cereals, breads, crackers, cookies, jelly, juice, soda, chips, ketchup, mayo, yogurt, ice cream, baking mixe...

Tim -- I did mention that mountain bike to Eric when I got home. However, Eric had a road bike and headed down the hill before 8 AM. The mountain bike was there when I headed up and still there when I got back. Eric commented that the Manker campground got considerably livelier this morning. There w...

Baldy 5-23-09

My son abandoned me this week -- sort of. He bicycled from Glendale to Manker Flat on Thursday and camped for a couple of nights. On Friday he ran into some other college kids who could use some guiding, so he led them up the Ski Hut Trail. He biked back home today. So, I hiked up Baldy today. Skies...

Re: Want to stay healthy? DON'T EAT THIS

HFCS goes straight to your liver, unlike non fructose sugars. Since most Americans are taking in about 80% of their calories from HFCS, this is bad. In fact, children are now developing fatty liver disease and cirrhosis!! Way too much for our livers! Wait what? 80% of calories from HFCS? That's so ...

The 12' rock pile at the west end of the tunnel was cleared on Monday the 11th. I was told about that this weekend. The gate at Eaton Saddle has or had a sign on it stating the road is closed to all. If that sign is gone then someone took it down. I'm not surprised it would be taken down. There are those out there that think signs do not pertain to them. They must be the "experienced " hikers who alway...

That's a great hike. It's only a mile and a half from the Vivian Creek parking lot to the Momyer trailhead. We've finished off several hikes with that walk down the road past the friendly residents of Forest Falls. It's not bad at all. Especially in the downhill direction! :D

The slide was easily passable. The snake in the tree provided a humorous moment. I was leaning on the tree and stepped away for a minute. When I put my arm out to lean on it again, I put my hand right on the middle of the snake. He just froze, as if posing for the picture. Fortunately, our earlier e...

We came through the tunnel from the other direction. We got all the way through and then my educated son saw that the road was unsafe. Naturally, he was shocked, as the picture shows. :o
