Re: Sugarloaf 7-11-09

We did originally figure we'd visit Ontario and Bighorn. By the time we got to the ridge near Ontario I saw that Eric was limping and headed left instead of right. We glanced at the ridge leading to Bighorn on the way down but were not tempted.

Re: Sugarloaf 7-11-09

We were thinking about going up the scree slope that leads to the saddle on the ridge that goes up to Ontario. (See HPS description.) After looking it over, the scree seemed like less fun than actual ground. So we traversed over to the right a fair bit. There were some short Class 3 sections that co...

Sugarloaf 7-11-09

Eric and I climbed Sugarloaf Peak via Falling Rock Canyon and returned by ascending to Ontario Rdge and taking the Ice House Canyon Trail back to the car. Eric had his ankle hit by a pretty decent-sized rock that came loose while traversing a scree slope. (This was AFTER leaving Falling Rock Canyon,...

The trail is due for another dose of volunteerism. I am going to try to find some time when it's a little less toasty. It was hot out there on Friday!

Trail Canyon Trail 7-3-09

Eric and I were not sure we'd get to hike on the long weekend, but managed to find some time on a hot Friday afternoon. We hiked up and down the Trail Canyon Trail from Big Tujunga Canyon Road on a 90+ degree day. We turned around at the Condor Peak Trail due to time constraints. We had never been i...

Re: BIG MAP

My statement yesterday concerning resolution was too glib. I don't recall ever missing features on TOPO! maps that I can make out on the equivalent USGS ones, but I should not have said that the resolution is the same. I am satisfied with the use I have gotten from TOPO! maps over 12 years. What I n...

Bill, I too am sorry for your bad news. We all owe your dad our thanks. And I'm still stuck back on the B-17 business (dentists and clarinet players deserve kudos too). AFAIK, you don't install the data. When you zoom in to Level 4 or Level 5, it will ask for the disc. At all other zoom levels you don't need the disc. Instead of putting the disc in each time, you can copy the data to your hard drive using VIEW > TOPO! Product Setup I'll second what Tim has said. I...

Re: Baldy for Baldy 20090620

Way to go guys. I think 2x would be beyond a lot of folks. To make the obvious comparisons, I think that 3X was significantly harder than a full C2C. You get 20% more elevation gain but also have to walk down every step you walked up -- on a steep grade! I'll let Rick decide if 5X is equivalent to ...

Re: 25 Peaks in 24 Hours (5/30/09)

For the future, you should start measuring hikes like these in terms of peaks per hour (pph). This past hike was 1.04pph. I can think of examples of doing 2 peaks in 1 hour, thereby doubling Rick's figure of merit. :D Actually, pph is an amusing stat to banter about. We do the San Gorgonio 9 Peaks ...
