Re: Baldy summit vandalism

Personally, I would never tear down something that so many people seem to enjoy. But I do wish they were never built in the first place. I know i was disappointed to see those things up there my first time up. I also dont like damming creeks for swimming, placing rocks and logs for stream crossings...

Re: Baldy summit vandalism

Is it possible they didnt know they were vandalising something? Are those windshelters official structures of some kind or are they just improvised shelters made by hikers? if they are built by hikers looking for a break from the wind, then is this really vandalism? Of course, if they truly were tr...

Re: Baldy summit vandalism

There seem to be several kinds of vandals at work. People who spray paint markers on rocks and trees are not in the same camp as people who destroy what they view as unnatural structures (e.g., rock rings on Baldy's summit). People who start forest fires are in another class altogether. I would pre...

Re: Fire in SG East Fork

I went up Baldy today and added West Baldy in order to have a look at the fire. For a 4000 acre fire, it looked pretty quiet (it was 10:30 in the morning). There was no sign of aircraft. It was beautifully clear on Baldy and even Iron Mountain looked clear, as di deSan Antonio Ridge. https://eispira...

Re: Mountain Lion Hunter May be Removed from Post

I have seen nothing suggesting that the guy lose his freedom. He had his freedom, he exercised it, and he still has it. It seems like Mr. Richards is not free to engage in a legal activity without suffering reprisals from those who don't agree with what he did. That is true of just about everybody ...

No, I'd still be there!

I tossed a couple of small sticks onto him until he decided to move on. Near-misses did nothing.

Yeah, pick your poison. I opted for "neither" but it took some doing to convince the critter to crawl away.

The Forest Service finally admits that extinguishing small fires has resulted in super fires (here) while increasing its budget for air tankers (here). The first point has been understood for years. Both points are not mutually exclusive, however. I second that. "Finally admits" is wildly...

Yes, yes, and yes.

Actually, the snow part is only partly true. There was plenty of snow in a few places but you could walk right through any of it.

Any info on the skihut trail? Wouldn't mind running up there tomorrow morning but no idea what to expect. I hiked up Baldy via the Ski Hut today (Friday, March 23). There is a fair amount of snow left from last weekend's storm. The snow on the trail starts about 1000' below the Hut. Above the Hut, ...

Re: Gabrielino in a day, or not

I believe that some of the trail is still closed because of the Station Fire.

My son and I did the Gabrielino Trail as a day hike in 2009. We got around the need for a car relay by bicycling from the Windsor Ave. parking lot to Chantry Flats. That is an interesting warm-up to a long hike.
