EricK cruises up Iron Mountain in 2:15
EricK is the son of AlanK, not an actual ID on this board. I was tempted to use the title “Father disowns son for ditching him on Iron Mountain”, but that would not be very accurate. Eric and I have hiked Iron Mountain together 8 times since he was 11 and both of us have been increasingly curious ab...

Re: Turn outs
Coming down the Baldy Road yesterday, I think the guy 5 cars in front of me was trying to see how many people he could slow down to 30 mph. Using a turn-out would have spoiled his quest.

Baldy Ski Hut/Backbone 6-4-10
You can go all the way to the summit -- there are few slick parts on the ridge but without any serious exposure. We had no crampons/axes, just trekking poles. I took mve's word for it hiked up Mt. Baldy via the Ski Hut Trail on a gorgeous day. Temperatures were in the 70s and 80s and it was calm an...

In case anyone wants to see conditions on the Ski Hut and Baldy Bowl trails, I was up there on Sunday, and took a few pics: Nice pics! I was up there Saturday... I noticed you have the Ski Hut listed at 8.4 miles round trip which is something I have wondered about. I have seen 4.2 miles listed as t...

Re: Mt. Wilson via Chantry Flat 5/15/2010
That bench was built as a memorial for a trail runner out of Sierra Madre that died on the ridge. I believe he hit an ice chute while running with his daughter, but not positive. I heard the story quite a while ago, however I did hear it from one of the men that built the bench: Pete McNulty. The b...

With Mt Wilson being right on the fire line, it's a bit hard to figure out what areas/trails were either scorched or destroyed by rain/mud and which ones are still good for and open to hikers. Does anyone have recent information or experience on Mt Wilson? I'm esp. interested in trails like the Old...

My gut feeling is that the downhill effort level is higher. Once you pass about 10% downgrade I feel like downhill starts to use more energy than flat. Maybe I'm confusing the jarring to muscles and joints with energy expenditure. I'd say you are. Think about how hard you're breathing, or your puls...
