Re: Michelle Yu's Last words
How about you voluntarily show some empathy for the family and respect for the dead? Then thread-locking won't be necessary. There are no further lessons to be learned from this tragedy and continued public discussion borders on the macabre, IMHO. Taco runs a great board and I respect his decision ...

Re: Michelle Yu's Last words
Fish Fork is to the west of the ridge connecting Baldy and Dawson and to the north of San Antonio Ridge. One cannot fall in the vicinity of the Devil's Backbone and end up down there. I have not seen anyone post an exact location for where she ended up, but people have mentioned the possibilities of...

Re: Dec. 5th, 2010: 'Experienced' hiker missing on Baldy
I received a couple of PM's and understand that visibility on top may have been down to zero for a time on Saturday afternoon. Having been on Baldy in whiteout conditions, I can understand disorientation and how easy it could be to make a terrible error. Unfortunately, none of this discussion can he...

Re: Dec. 5th, 2010: 'Experienced' hiker missing on Baldy
Alan K: The report you quote makes sense. She didn't return from her dayhike on Saturday and then the rescue was hampered by bad weather the following day. Another horrible winter accident on Mt. Baldy. I read somewhere that she was planning to descend Devil's Backbone. I suspect she mistakenly des...

Re: Dec. 5th, 2010: 'Experienced' hiker missing on Baldy
From Inland News Today MOUNT BALDY – Last weekend’s storm may have caused an experienced alpine hiker to lose her way on Mt. Baldy and ultimately her life. Searchers found the body of Michelle Yu, 49, Wednesday on the northwest side of the icy peak at Fish Fork. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Arden Wiltshire...

Re: Dec. 5th, 2010: 'Experienced' hiker missing on Baldy
Ken Murray had a good comment on this subject on the WPS Board this question often comes up. As I have seen the discussions go, outside help is STRONGLY discouraged, sometimes to the point of arresting people. The reason is that searches end up becoming very methodical explorations of terrain, in wh...

Actually, that "witness" was the accuser. There was no trail. The charges were dropped when she reached an agreement with Bryant that he would publicly apologize and she would not testify against him. The civil suit that she had filed earlier went forward until the two sides settled out o...

Re: Speaking of mt. bikes & hiking trails
I'm an avid mountain biker and like the others said the biker should yield to horses and hikers or bikers traveling up hill. I ride with a bear bell on my handlebars so hikers hear me coming on narrow trails. I normally ride >50 miles per week and haven't had a bad encounter with horse or hiker in ...

Mark Hurlbert is the district attorney of the 5th Judicial District. Mark Hurlburt was the DA who prosecuted Kobe Bryant. He's such a sharp lawyer that he didn't notice his witness had zero credibility until a few days before the trial. Actually, that "witness" was the accuser. There was ...

Want to take the kids to Sturtevant Falls this Saturday. No problem with that? No problem at all. Well, except for parking at Chantry Flats, which is the same as always. So get there early? On a Saturday, earlier is better. Also, it is usually possible to park on the side of the road below Chantry ...

I have hiked up Mt. Wilson four times since the Station Fire. The Old Mt. Wilson Trail is fine, as are Sturtevant and Upper Winter Creek. Also, Mt. Zion, etc. The trail to Newcomb Pass is closed. Re: "Photography on the Run" on the closure
Well said indeed. I have generally been understanding, even supportive, of forest closures, etc. after past fires. At the very least, I try to give those in authority the benefit of the doubt. But, in the aftermath of the Station Fire, I see virtually no sign that those in authority have any idea th...

Rick Kent accident 10/16/10
From Rick Kent's Facebook page Had a great time in Englestead Canyon on Friday. Saturday not so good. At the 1st rap into Gunsight Canyon a huge boulder next to the rappel station decided to roll loose and I was in the way. Re: How to Push Past the Pain, as the Champions Do (NYTimes)
Pain? Why? I don't go hiking to feel pain. Well, ok, I may make an exception once in a while, but I don't think that a bit of exertion constitutes pain. A good 30 mile hike with 1000; of gain is a workout. Pain is getting hit over the head with a 2x4. I do recall spraining my ankle coming down Forre...

Great video. It captured some famous, if now deceased, members. My favorite quotes on the subject are both from Nixon, who joined in 1953, apparently hated it, but kept going back for more. The Bohemian Grove, that I attend from time to time—the Easterners and the others come there—but it is the mos...
