Bear Flat - Baldy - Ski Hut

It was a quiet Friday -- only one other person on the Bear Flat trail (unless someone started after 9:15). There was basically no snow on the trail until after the narrows, when it was time to put on the crampons and traverse on a lot of crusty stuff. I decided to go down via the Ski Hut for variety...

Re: Feb or March Baldy Climb

I recommend that you join Kurt Wedberg's group hike up Baldy from Manker Flat this coming Friday (see this thread, particularly Kurt's post on January 25). Kurt's hikes attract a varied crew and are always fun for all. Meet at Manker Flat at 6 AM on Friday, February 11. Kurt is not going to be able...

The last time I was in that area, the trail from Sturtevant Camp to Newcomb Saddle and over to Mt. Wilson was still marked "closed." Hi, Alan, At what location did you see that sign? I was at Sturtevant Camp a couple of weeks ago and saw no signs re the trail to Newcomb saddle. The sign w...

Re: Baldy ... just once

So anyway, I apologize for making a post about only reaching the summit once. After having summited Baldy 5 times in a single day it felt right that this should be the first peak I returned to. I think that this TR is as big a deal as your 5 summits in a day one. It's great to see that you are hitt...

Re: 1.27.11 - almost halfway up Iron

Given that Baldy is basically clear to the Ski Hut, I would expect the Iron Mt. route to be snow free. There is some steep scrambling on that route, so it would not be my favorite hike with one arm in a cast (or tied behind my back).

Re: The Station Fire Thread

I blew up the map to try to check place names and the only word I could make out is "Pyongyang." Is that even in the ANF? If the FS really wanted to produce a better map, they could give a small grant to a local school and a third grade class could take it on as a short project. My view is...

I like the innovation of including pictures of the post-hike meal. That may provide as much inspiration as pictures of the hike itself. 8)

Re: 1.13.11 mt wilson trail report (out of sierra madre)

The elevation of the trailhead in Sierra Madre is at a bit below 1000' and the summit (say, the gazebo) is just over 5700'. So, the net gain is between 4700' and 4800'. A GPS provides total elevation gain/loss, which is greater due to ups and downs in the trail. This particular trail is pretty relen...

Re: Baldy Ski Hut - 12/31/2010

In your opinion, how tough would it be to go up the "regular" route via the ridge to the summit in the micros? A couple rocky sections come to mind (like just before the sign near the Hellcat wreckage) that I really don't know what to expect in winter... but overall, I can't think of any ...

Re: Summiting with out your packs

I call the junction of the JMT with the Whitney trail "the Grayhound Bus Terminal" because there is always luggage there -- it looks to me like someone should be stowing it under a bus. So, yes, lots of people stow packs there while going to the summit. When we were finishing the JMT in 20...

I predict the road won't open this Monday. Instead the new concrete will cure too rapidly and burst into flames and explode (a la Alan's concrete floor  ) causing the forest to burn down again. Despite the rain. 10 more years of closure. It's too quiet. In particular, my floor has been very q...

If the guy has sleep apnea as severe as he is claiming, his being behind the wheel of a car seems like criminal negligence. We aren't talking about some Mexican kid on a joy ride here. This, sir, is a Wall Street Fund Manager . Such people never engage in criminal negligence, and when they do, it's...
