Re: bad things happen in nice places

In reaching for a positive angle on the tequila drinking death story, I am struck by the fact that none of his buddies used either a sword or a baseball bat on the victim.

Re: Mt Baldy Pine and Dawson on Oct 13

For Manker Flat, you can subtract about 2000' compared to the hike from Baldy Village. Maybe 7000' is a better estimate than 6000'

Re: Mt Baldy Pine and Dawson on Oct 13

I also like doing the hike from Wrightwood. The section from the dirt road up Pine is a lot of fun and I see enough of Manker Flat on other occasions. Regarding elevation gain and mileage, 6200' may be about right but the mileage seems short for a return via the Notch. If you walk down, the Manker -...

Re: IP Address

As discussed long ago on the WPS Board, in the case of AOL, the large set of IP addresses (not one single address) that it uses for one of its sites are shared among AOL users in that region. So, the situation can occur in which one IP address is used, at various times, by different users. For this ...

Re: IP Address

This problem has surfaced on several other boards. It is possible for two unrelated members to have the same IP address but it does not happen all that often. On the other hand, if several members register and immediately set about demeaning other members, you are probably dealing with a single trol...

Re: SG Canyoneering Sept

There is a rumor going around that swords will have to be registered, at least in Baldy Village.

But a machete is not a sword, so one can still hope to be properly equipped up there.

Re: SG Canyoneering Sept

Rick -- I enjoyed your pictures as usual. I came across the pictures of an abandoned pot farm in your Mt. Lukens album. I have often wondered what faaction of those hills is devoted to pot farming. There were a couple of sizeable raids recently in the Verdugos, wiich puts them pretty close to civili...

Re: Nice Site!

Alan K - Trust me I've been up Whitney more times than you have. I've had the pleasure if talking to Doug more times than you have. I simply can't imagine that anyone cares how many times either of has either been up Whitney or talked to Doug. What I do care about is that a large fraction of your p...

Re: Nice Site!

One of the other sites is owned by a person who owns a store at a trailhead. The only site that meets that description is the Whitney Portal Sttore Messaage Board... which maks the next sentence confusing: His reasons for massaging everybody's ego who posts on his site are obvious. Doug is a great ...

Re: Nice Site!

This site has taken off like gangbusters. There was obviously a lot of pent-up demand out there. Maybe that's no surprise, given the number of hikers I regularly encounter in the San Gabriels. Nevertheless, I am amazed by the breadth of the conversations in such a short time. I think we'd be lucky t...

From the SGWA Board To set the record straight . . . Posted by Kandy on October 2, 2007, 9:45:27, in reply to "YIKES!" 209.232.147.100 This story has taken on a life of its own and has almost become an urban legend. I called the Baldy Visitor's Center this morning. This incident did NOT ta...

Re: Good hiking routes up Mount Pacifico and Mount Gleason??

A couple of years ago, my son and I wanted to do Gleason, having seen it from various angles, but the hiking sounded uninspiring. We ended up doing it on a roughly 25 mile bicycle loop from the Highway 14 side. It was a nice ride with good views, but it was mostly fire roads. Mt. Gleason itself was ...

Travis -- that sucks! But it's good to hear that you got the thing out. I had a hike curtailed by a yucca stabbing once, but it was not as major an outing. Still -- there'll be other days! Good luck! :P

Re: Are there any other events like the Mount Baldy Run?

The answer is "yes." Here are a few:

Mt. Wilson Trail Race (Sierra Madre to Orchard Camp and back on Mt. Wilson Trail, 5.6 mi) -- 5/31/08

Mt. Disappointment 50/50 Eudurance Runs (50 km and 50 mi) -- 8/9/08

Angeles Crest 100 Mile Endurance Run -- 9/13/08
