Re: The Verdugos -- Fire Warden's Grove Loop

Jim was not kidding when he said: The Boy Scouts have placed a bench of the type that I would expect at a beach resort at the point where the trail takes off. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/www.alank.smugmug.com/photos/213703214-M.jpg https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/www.alank.smugmug....

Re: City Hiking Section

Jim has a good point. For example, the Verdugo Mountains overlap the cities of Glendale, Burbank, and Los Angeles but the entire range fits into the "LA Urban Hiking" category.

It's sad that such measures are necessary. On the other hand, the moderator of another hiking board always says that the effort devoted to screening gets to be quite small once the trolls figure out that they are not tolerated. :D

I did the loop as part of a longer hike yesterday. The Fire Warden's Grove Loop is 6.9 miles.

Tour de Verdugo 10-27-07

Calling the Verdugo Mountains part of the San Gabriels is stretching things, However, with the ANF closed for hte time being due to fire danger, several of us have been touting the Verdugos as an alternative. Yesterday, I combined two of my favorite Verdugo routes. One was what Hikin_Jim calls the F...

Re: The Verdugos -- Fire Warden's Grove Loop

I'm not sure that's an "official" name. That's more of a Hikin' Jim "I need some way to refer to the durned thing" kind of a designation. Seems to make sense: the major feature en-route is Fire Wardens Grove. FWIW, I've been calling it "The Fire Warden's Grove Loop" si...

Jim -- I like that loop. I didn't realize it had a name -- at least not that one. :-) I certainly recall the old car wreck. That loop was one of my possibilities for the weekend. :D

Re: Angeles National Forest Closure - October 23

Far be it from me to defend Southern California air, which is the dirtiest in the country. But don't judge things by what is happening near the coast. That is typically where one finds the good air, but Santa Anas and fires result in lots of smoke in places like Long Beach (singled out in an article...

Re: What's a good way to measure hiking performance?

Getting back to the original subject of this thread, I have some inkling of a physical basis for the formulas contributed by Rob and Jim. In one of the several discussions on the WPS Message Board of hiking energy expenditure , I offered the following rule of thumb: energy used (in Calories) = 0.6 *...

Anybody have a guess if the SG National forest will be re-opened by this Sat? If not anyone want to carpool to the southern sierra????? Olancha peak?? langley?? Cirque??? If I had to guess, I would go with several weeks for the closure, assuming no more big fires (which may be quite an assumption)....

Here is an ANF map. The bad news is that most of the places one thinks of (e.g., most of the Mt. Wilson trail from Sierra Madre) are in the NF.

Re: Angeles National Forest Closure - October 23

My favorite Verdugo hikes are from the trailheads about a mile west along La Tuna Road from the I-210 crossing. I usually go up one and down the other, with some excursion along the ridge. There is an informal trail called the Viper Trail that takes off from the end of the short fire road at the top...

It's good to see that someone here is getting into the urban hiking spirit. I am thinking about kayaking the LA River myself. (I just need some rollers for the kayak -- it sure won't float on bare concrete.)

Re: Angeles National Forest Closure - October 23

I started a discussion on the San Jacinto board about the closure of the SBNF and the State Park. The Skyline Trail from Palm Springs to the Tram is not in the State Park and is the one hard hike in the area that does not get shut down by these fire closures. Unfortunately, you have to stop at the T...

CC on the SGWA Message Board posted that the Cleveland NF was closed yesterday.

I think that Jim is right -- Mt. Lukens may become very popular. I think that the Deukmejian routes are legal (Crescenta View Trail and rim of the Valley Trail).

Re: What's a good way to measure hiking performance?

This is an interesting problem. I have never found a good formula that covers my own hikes, let alone other peoples' hikes, but I am inspired ot think about it some more. One indication of the difficulty of applying one's personal formulas to others: I do Iron Mountain in about 3.5 hours. It's 7 mil...

I forgot that there were two forks to that trail -- also that it was called the Sister Elsie Trail. I have seen the east fork but always blown right by it because I like the route that ends up o nthe top part of the Stone Canyon Trail. I have taken Haines Canyon all the way down -- boring. Re: bad things happen in nice places

I've always liked the Stone Canyon Trail. The parking lot has had more and more trash in the 6 years I've been using it, but it's not too bad. For whatever reason, I tend to do that hike in the middle of the day, so I've met some interesting characters hanging out around the creek. As soon as I head...

For another variation, my son and I once parked at the Grassy Hollow parking lot on Rte. 2 and bicycled to the trailhead on Blue Ridge before doing Pine, Dawson and Baldy. There is a great spot above the Ski Hut. The ideal would be to get the use of the Hut. You'll have no trouble attracting a group of like-minded folks.
