HJ, you've already made an earnest effort at compromise. You no longer air your sleeping bag, tent, ground cloth, and other hiking gear in the living room 5 days per week, and you now carry an electronic panic button "just in case."

Re: Attempted Baldy 9 Peaks Challenge, 02-Aug-2008

my car was parked outside the Visitor Center. .... up Bear Canyon Rd. .... My GPS could not receive any signals .... it didn't start recording until he dropped me off. I've ascended BCT 3 times and each time been unable to get a good jumping-off GPS fix at the Visitor's Center. My Garmin says it ac...

Thanks, HJ. So the real Meadow is the lush vegetation growing along the banks of the western-most creek branch? I'll explore uphill on that side of the trail camp the the next time I pass through.

Re: N00b backpacking trip in San Gorgonio Wilderness, 12-13 July

Finally got a decent turn-out for one of my OCHBC n00b overnights to John's Meadow this last weekend. My son told me that he wanted to soak his feet in a mountain stream, so we made Johns Meadow our destination for July 19-20. Simonov's recent photos, together with a long, detailed write-up on John...

Re: Mountain Lion sighted near JPL: 2008-01-16

So a mountain lion is brown all over and has rounded ears, while a bobcat has some stripes and pointed ears? :?: In 2002 when we were tent camping in an RV park north of Idyllwild, this critter made himself at home in our campsite. Children tip-toed for a close look; however, he did not eat any of t...

Ski lift tips

1. Remove backpack and place on ski lift seat next to you.

2. Stow hiking poles in backpack.

Other tips?

Re: Help get rid of the Adventure Pass!

. . . . Gangbangers who grafitti all the rocks with gang signs written in Spanish. Last month between Baldy ski lift and Manker Flat, I noticed a rock spray-painted "Welcome to Mexico." That irritated me. I've literally seen 50 vehicles parked in no-parking areas, without Adventure Passes...

Joe, great TR! Thanks for posting. Your first altitude symptom was headache, and from what I've read, that's breathing-related, therefore KathyW's suggestion of pressure breathing should help the next time you go up. (You did not report fatigue as an impairing issue, so I guess that your blood corre...

Re: Help get rid of the Adventure Pass!

Speaking of logging, if you know a teacher, ask him or her to consider attending Forestry Institute for Teachers (FIT) , if not this summer, then maybe next year. Duration is 1 week at one of several Northern California locations. My wife attended in 2007, and she reported that presentations were ba...

My wife wants me to stay in touch with her at all times . . . cell phones and pagers don't work in the mountains. So far, my wife has no interest in getting a Ham radio license and monitoring a home base station while I'm hiking. In the meantime, I added a small Ham transceiver to my list of essent...

Re: Manker Flats, 5-31-2008

I hate it when someone takes my favorite parking spot. :) Head count at Baldy Summit @ 11:30 a.m. = approx 30 (It was difficult to count heads because most people were taking shelter from the brisk S-SW wind.) On my way down DBB trail, when I reached the saddle between Baldy & Harwood, I turned ...

Re: Mt Harwood, 5-31-2008

Heading east from Mt Harwood summit, is there a trace trail that intersects with DBB Trail? I didn't see one -- maybe I didn't look in the right place. As I stepped carefully down off the ridge to DBB Trail, I was concerned that I might cause a small rock slide that would take out an innocent hiker ...

On 5-31-2008, after Baldy, I tagged Mt Harwood, then went sightseeing along the ridge to the east of Mt Harwood. That left me looking for the secret stairway down to Devil's Backbone Trail. Is there one?

Re: Today Only: Awesome deal on GPS (no ad)

The software being the Mapsource stuff? Is this just for the computer, or also to access maps on the GPS unit? Sorry for being dense, I just have never used a GPS before. But I do think I can 'acquire' that sort of software pretty easily. It's good to ask a lot of questions about the software. When...
