Re: Bailey Canyon Falls: July 2024
Removed above ground part of fig tree stump and groomed a bit. Gif Av2.gif edit to add a story: early last month I went up to remove the stump (level it off at ground level), but a young man came along and asked if I was going to transplant the fig tree. I said no, just going to level it off - it's ...

What a hike! I found your swag up at rabbit peak a while back when exploring the area myself. thumbnail_IMG_0303.jpg thumbnail_IMG_9442.jpg Cool to see that a group like this exists! I also ran into the owner of the Monte Cristo Mine who gave me a nice welcome and offered me a ride to the base of r...

Re: Mount Emma, Old Emma, Cole Point
Fun hike despite having no point. I did the Emmas the same way. The Karen on Old Emma looks like it has been knocked about a bit! Circa 2009... IMG_2897.jpg The BM on Cole is (was in 2009) attached to a rock that has been kicked around the summit so god knows where it is now. I found the rock on its...

Ha!
I was tipped off to this movie by a bartender at a gin distillery in Savannah. I think you should ask him as to why he recommended it. lol
I told Sean that he'd like it!

Hundreds of Beavers
In this silent supernatural epic, a drunken applejack salesman is thrust into the frigid wilderness. Can he go from Zero to Hero, become North America's greatest fur trapper, and defeat hundreds of beavers?

Re: Reflections on the Strawberry Peak west ridge
My memory of the route is that there were a shit ton of arrows, dots and other marks of various colors that went in all sorts of different directions. We just followed boot prints and logic. I got nervous at only one location where we could see straight down the north face (1000+ feet). A mistake or...

Re: Josephine west ridge recon
The HPS site doesn't have an official route description for the west ridge. The only description is in the TR that you have seen. It describes bypassing the ephemeral waterfall on the right and ascend the subsidiary ridge up to the main ridge. I stayed in the drainage and ended up on the wrong subsi...

Re: Josephine west ridge recon
Here's google street view at point C. XUntitled.png Thinking back on my approach from 22.45, it was a loose scree and steep climb that was only getting brushier and brushier as it went up. I hadn't done any prep other than "park at 22.45", so I said screw it. Although thinking back on it, ...

A is mm 22.45 where I started in a failed attempt.
B is mm 22.95.
C is where I think you are proposing to start from.

There is mention of mile marker 22.95 as a starting point. Matt Maxon mentions it on this forum.

My best advice - ignore most of what I have said on this forum! I tried once in a half-hearted manner. It didn't go. Member @Travis (or maybe it was member @Augie ) did do it at some point in the past (prior to my "attempt"). You can likely find his (there) report or route info on summitpo...

Re: Hillyer and a side of Devil
Sorry I missed it.
Devil Peak, the observatory and Mt. Mooney used to be heavily forested with no views except from parts of the road connecting the three. Which fire burned all of the trees? The station fire?

I' had a relapse of my cancer and am going under the knife this week to remove it. Hopefully it all goes well but I'll be out of commission at least for a month. See you on the other side, I hope! I hope they get it all. Gotta give the drugs their best chance to work. I switched from Keytruda to th...

Will Thrall just sounds cool. Also my favorite peak in the range. I was greeted by a Golden Eagle when I made it to the summit.

Re: Bailey Canyon Falls: July 2024
It's October 15th, 2024 and the falls are still going! 20241014_094451.jpg I spent this morning eliminating a pair of unnecessary water crossings. Some volunteer fig tree had seemingly forced the route into a quick back and forth crossing that got your shoes wet for no reason. A view looking down st...

Re: Akawie, Vetter, Mooney, and Devil
In 2007 I did the same 3 peaks one day (minus Akawie).
In April 2009 I was able to drive up to the observatory although the road was heavily rutted.
Looks like they've painted and changed doors since 2009...

Chantry Flats is open now I think.
Mt. Wilson from Sierra Madre or from Eaton Canyon are good elevation gains.

So sad to see the trees on Granite and Round Top gone. Here's a picture of Granite taken from Round Top 15 years ago...
