Too cool!
Great spot for capturing mountain lion activity with a trail cam.
Are those isolated trees dispersed through out the flat planted by man?
Can it fill up with water during extreme rain fall? Would such water percolate down through the soil before filling the flat to the point it would ...

Thanks David. Your description of the section between the bench and orchid camp is spot on to our "current status". Meaning thanks for the confirmation!

I don't know a damn thing about the trail from Barley Flats to Alder Creek, but it was a nice walk with great expansive views. How old is it? Is it a part of an historic route from wherever to whatever?

FWIW...
There's a trail that heads north out of Barley Flats that "ends" where Alder Creek crosses under Upper Big Tujunga (9-mile) Road. This is where you can continue on the Alder Creek Trail northbound, Chilao, and beyond...

based only on sketchy local news, the three bodies were found in the same area. the one 19 year old was specifically reported as falling from the devil's backbone trail...
which makes me think of the one short stretch of "u-shaped" trail above the very steep ravine just before you get to the ridge ...

Re: Bailey Canyon Falls: July 2024
In general, yes. The falls are a good 10 to 15 feet higher (i.e. 10 to 15 feet of soil that used to be at the base of the falls is now gone...down to bedrock). The rest of the canyon is anywhere from 0' to less that 10' deeper for same reason.

Re: Bailey Canyon Falls: July 2024
December 2, 2025. Recent November rains have scrubbed the canyon clean of almost all sand/soil/dirt. A lot of exposed bedrock. No plants , no nothing. The flow is decent over the falls and continuous in the creek. Shallow enough flow that walking in the water won't get you wet.
