Re: Mt Emma

January 2009 I hiked Mt. Emma & Old Mt. Emma & road back to car. Didn't see a single person or other car the whole day if I recall correctly. Don't recall any shells. Only sign of other humans was the dirt bike scars/trails left all over the dang place. Plus this most magnificent cairn on Old Emma ...

No. Trail crew is still doing maintenance on Bailey Cyn rail to Jones Peak and beyond. Trail is still closed because the trail leads to Forest land which is still closed due to Eaton Fire. End of year is tentative opening of Forest/trail.

Re: Bailey Canyon Falls: July 2024

It's been 8 months since I was last at the waterfall. Late-winter & spring rains really cleaned the canyon out. Absolutely 0% of the trail is left intact, but right now you can just walk up the stream bed with a couple of small rock scrambles. What little vegetation there is poses no navigational ...

Re: Is anyone making small daypacks with daisy chain loops?

Does this fit the bill? 15.5L capacity and it has two rows of loops.

I've had several Cloudwalkers over the years and they've been perfect daypacks as far as I am concerned.

The name 'Cairn Terrier' comes from cairns, where the terriers often flushed out vermin. Cairn Terriers are happy, busy little earthdogs originally bred to fearlessly root out foxes and other small, furred prey in the rocky ...

I knew these topics existed, but couldn't find them. Thanks. Your crash site TR mentions you were on this road for a bit starting at the bottom - nice!

Re: Peak 5,795 and Winston Ridge

@cougarmagic raised a question 10 or 15 years ago about an apparent abandoned road that headed west from the saddle just north of Winston Peak. She noted that it didn't appear to go anywhere, but looking at what I think is lidar scans of the area, the road switchbacks down into the upper reaches of ...

Sounds like a real shit fest. I hate people as a species because of this kind of crap.

Re: My current San Gabriel backcountry gear breakdown

I've been carrying the Fiskar loppers since early 2000's...still on my first set. I think I picked them up at OSH for less than $10. I tend to hit my head on low branches, especially going downhill...so I will cut all offending branches.

They seemingly weigh about 1oz, but I'm sure they must be at ...

Re: French summer ride-about. Part 3: Grand Veymont

Aren't the bikes that the TDF riders ride at about 15 or 16 lbs?

From watching various accounts of the Tour it is apparent the bikes are fragile though. No chance you could survive one of your treks on that kind of bike, Ryan.

Re: French summer ride-about. Part 3: Grand Veymont

When you got down to 26lbs, that was with the bare bike? What were you doing to save weight? Fancier components?

Yes, lighter components. Probably would have been cheaper (and more effective) to buy a lighter frame, but I enjoyed the idea of futzing with the various components. New road /track ...

Laissez les bons temps rouler, as we say in New Orleans! Thanks for the TR.

I'm curious how much your bike weighs without the panniers and whatever that thing on your handlebar is. 40 years ago, I managed to get my steel framed bike down to about 26 lbs or so when I lived and biked around Austin. I ...

Google maps labels where the PCT crosses Highway 2 (ACH) as "6000 Ft Day Use". This is 1.3 miles east of Three Points. Near "Camp Glenwood". Of those three "landmarks" I've previously heard of one. BTW, PCT crosses ACH here at 6200 ft elevation.

TLDNR: words matter.

I did read it though, and you've put into words my exact thoughts on several of your "points".

BTW, I saw you riding your bike down Colorado Blvd once in Pasadena (heading to work I suppose). Before I realized it you had turned on a side street and I lost you.
