With Hasting's Canyon practically in my back yard, I am curious about your bushwhack route to the drop in point. I assume your exit point was Ranch Top Rd.?

Also, curious to see the pics of Hasting's. Thanks in advance for posting!

Buckhorn Peak is now called Mt. Akawie by the Sierra Club.

Goodykoontz is what the Sierra Club calls a heretofore unnamed peak south east of Pallett. It is just north of the FROG zone (map) (pdf files).

Re: Early Morning Mount Pacifico Hike - October 21

I find it particularly odd that Devil's Peak is not included on the list being as it is higher than Mooney. Devil's Peak's prominence is about 5870'- 5630' =240' Mooney's prominence is about 5840'- 5605' =235' I'm baffled. :? The ANF website describes these 2 peaks perfectly, except for the apparent...

If you go up to Mt. Mooney, check out the Stony Ridge Observatory and/or Devil's Peak (not sure if this is its official name). They are both south of Mt. Mooney. At 5870' I'm not quite sure why Devil's Peak isn't on the HPS list - anyone know why? Perhaps because the view is even more non-existent t...

Nah! He doesn't even need water or food. I hear he licks the sweat off of bears, drinks rattlesnake venom and bites the heads off of ground squirrels just to keep his mind from wandering.

Secondly if a hunter is up on a ridge or saddle and "glassing" for game. Do what you can not to surprise him or the game. He spent just as much time if not more climbing up there and really doesn't want his hunt ruined by a bunch of loud talking bell's on the boots wearing people. 2 years...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?

HJ, excellent information. Thanks. Definitely looks like the ridge that starts near Weber Camp is the logical choice. Looks like Weber Camp is at ~3600', a nice healthy gain of 6400' to Baldy. Hmm...I'll definitely wait for some one to restore the old trail before I even think about heading that way...

What information exists on this old route? Did there used to be an actual trail, or was it just a XC route?

Looking at the ridge on google earth, it also looks like there might be some access to the ridge from a little ways up Cattle Canyon above the confluence with Cow Canyon. Looks like there might be some serious access issues with all of the private holdings in the area. I vaguely remember Taco mentio...

Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?

I was up on the Bear Canyon trail to Baldy for the first time yesterday and I couldn't help notice Big Horn Ridge rising up on the other side of Cattle Canyon. Is that route doable? Does it involve anything more than class 2 hiking?

I think it's clear there are hikers (including myself 2 years ago) that have no idea when hunting season is and where hunting is allowed. It's clear to me that this thread is about informing hikers that hunting is allowed in the same place as hiking. As my earlier post said - I no longer hike during...

Two years ago I was on Islip and a week later on Pine Mt. in October - gunshots galore and a bunch of gunracks parked at the trailheads. :)

My bright orange bandanna was prominently on display to say the least. Also the last time I'll go hiking in that area during hunting season.

Re: What's a good way to measure hiking performance?

The formula(s) makes sense, but for me the gain adjustment factor is different for different slopes (e.g. a factor of 4 works for most "normal" slopes - say up to 750'/mile - but a factor of 2 works for 1000'/mile slopes). That is why I just go straight to my average mph for a given slope ...

Re: What's a good way to measure hiking performance?

The key to my personal formula is knowing how fast I can average on a trail of a given steepness. Therefore the important numbers to keep track of for me are ave. ft./mile and average mph. The other info (total distance, temperature, altitude, etc.) go into tweaking the final result. It's simple as ...

Re: What's a good way to measure hiking performance?

Alan, you're an animal.

But looking at your numbers:

~1000'/mile for Iron, Bear Canyon and Ski Hut trails.

Iron: 7 miles, 3.5 hours, 2.0 mph
Bear Canyon: 6 miles, 2.9 hours, 2.1 mph

so...

Ski Hut trail to Baldy: 4.0 miles, X hours, 2.2 mph ==> X=1.8 hours???

Re: What's a good way to measure hiking performance?

Interesting Rob. At first glance that seems a bit of a coincidence, but there might be some real logic behind it. I'll look at my numbers and see if that holds true. If so then I'll put some thought into why :) . The main reason I switch from mph to ft/hour is that when the trail gets steep enough (...

Re: What's a good way to measure hiking performance?

Once the trail gets steeper than 900-1000 ft/mile, my speed is so slow it can't be measured so I switch to vertical ft. per hour instead (1000 ft/hour sounds much better than <1 mph!). The data you are collecting seems adequate to help you predict future performance. Perhaps temperature or a ...

Heninger Flats has tables and piped water and a little county nature center (I think it's run by LA County Fire not the USFS. You might call county fire for conditions). Hey, I remembered! I was able to get the Polar Pod 20F Long into the stuff sack it came with and it measures about 16" long x 9 to 10" diameter. If you have a 15" long by 7" diameter stuff sack you'll have to do some serious stuffing, but it might be possible. My guess is the Pol...
