Iron Mountain #2 (not-so-big Iron): 12-15-2007
Headed up to Iron #2 on Saturday morning via Trail Canyon trail. Perfect weather for this 14 mile hike - no wind, clear skies, with temps in the mid 30's at the beginning and about 60 at the end. Started seeing patches of snow in the shade at about 4600' but the trail was completely clear. Saw some ...

Thanks for the nice TR. Then all the way back to the parking lot, meet a couple of hikers returning who had taken the tedious way in. Slowed so they didnt have the tedious way out. What's this about a non-tedious way in to the Bridge to Nowhere with just 4 water crossings? I would be very interested...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow
Had a hike up Mt Lowe scheduled for Saturday, and so far see no reason to postpone it. Which route are you going to take to Mt. Lowe? Last Sunday I was up that way and the middle sam merrill trail (from Echo Mt. to near Inspiration Pt.) was badly rutted by mountain bikes (on the lower half) and was...

Re: Canister stoves
At higher altitudes the water will boil at a lower temperature, thus the food won't cook as fast at that temp and cooking time is increased. Also, at higher altitudes the water generally starts off at a relatively lower temperature - so you may still end up using a similar amount of fuel and taking ...

Here is a picture taken from Iron of Condor and its western ridge. (from Bob Burd's TR) In the picture, the high point just below the "s" in Lukens is at about 5240'+ (200' lower than Condor). There is a lower peak south-southwest of this point at 5047' (400' lower than Condor) which is b...

Hmm, I wonder if it was me that you saw a 1/2 mile from the TH. I was on my way to the east fork of fusier canyon around 1pm. I had a red long sleeve on and was carrying a rope bag. It was pretty windy today! Yeah that was you. I was in the orange jacket as usual. Hi! I must have seen your picture ...

Condor Peak in the wind: 11-23-2007
A long leisurely stroll to Condor Peak on Friday after Thanksgiving (had to work off the turducken dinner!). Started at about 7 am from the trail head near Vogel Flat entrance in calm conditions and summited a little after 10 am in 20 mph winds with gusts over 30 mph and 50 F temps. Made for a chill...

From Hastings Peak I was looking down the ridge between Bailey and Hastings canyons and wondering if it would make a good shortcut route to descend from Hastings ...

dhstein31, on Saturday (11/10/2007) from Ski Hut Trail I had a good view of adventurers like you slugging your way along the wind-exposed "backbone" of Bear Canyon Trail. My heart went out to you. On Ski Hut Trail I didn't feel the northern wind until I reached Baldy Summit. What time wer...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
1) From an historic perspective it would be really cool to recreate the old trail from near Widman Ranch up to point 4652' . Epic bushwhacking would greatly diminish the cool factor though! Perhaps leave it as a long range goal. 2) Starting near Weber camp and going up the ridge on the north side of...
