Re: Gabrielino Trail (Big Santa Anita - West Fork - Arroyo Seco)
Thanks HJ. Your description agrees/confirms with how I have envisioned it. I was most uncertain with the upper part of the section from Switzer down to JPL. Problem with starting at Chantry is that you can't get in until "sunrise", so I'll have to wait until sunrise is a bit earlier than i...

Gabrielino Trail (Big Santa Anita - West Fork - Arroyo Seco)
I'm interested in day hiking the Gabrielino Trail from Chantry Flat to JPL. The Wikipedia entry reports the mileage at 28.5 miles and the elevation gain at 3500'. A brief look at the map seems to indicate more along the lines of 4500' including the ups and downs. Does anyone have first hand experien...

Re: Josephine Peak via West Ridge
I think your proposed route includes too much "trail" and bypasses a few bushes.
Kudos, though, on choosing to do it with rain/snow in the forecast!
Seriously, looks like you've found one of the more difficult/fun ways to bag Josephine. I'd guess you'll have some snow on Strawberry.

Re: Mt Wilson from Chantry Flay 2-18-08
I hadn't noticed the elevation gain/loss figure in the profile. It does seem to be exaggerated by ~1000'. The 5200' in the profile comes from the TOPO! program based on a track obtained from GPS data. I will have to look at home at what my GPS claims, but I think I'll blame TOPO! for the fudging th...

Re: Mt Wilson from Chantry Flay 2-18-08
Nice hike, thanks for the pics. 4 1/2 hours is quick. Took me a bit over 6 last summer. I noticed the elevation gain on the gps profile says a gain of 5200' - seems a bit much (I estimated about 4100' including the bumps). Are gps' as accurate with elevation gain as they are with distance traveled?

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
3 day weekend coming up, so 1 day I'm planning on walking down the road from cow canyon saddle to the top of the shortcut. God willing I'll post some pictures. Monrovia Peak (almost): 02-09-2008
Made a run at Monrovia Peak, but was turned back by icy snow conditions on the east ridge about 400' short of the peak. Hiked up via the Upper Clamshell /Rincon-Red Box roads for a nice 20 mile round trip walk in beautiful conditions. Great views. Looking up the shaded, steep east ridge (having just...

While up on Monrovia Peak's east ridge I took some photos of Twin Peaks' east ridge. A sequence of 5 pics, starting at the top and panning down the ridge. Thought they would be of interest. Nice TR. Interesting "route finder" descent! Congrats. I've seen TR's from way back (60's or 70's I think) describing a route from Chantry Flat to Clamshell. I'm going back at this peak this Saturday, but I plan on doing the Sierra Club Route #3 (20+ mile round trip death march up/down Upp...

That yellow line sure does look like it is going through a cliff band. Like AW said, you won't know for sure until you get to that point on the road.
Zooming in on Rick K's photo, it certainly looks cliffy.

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
Cool work, Travis.
Do you think the "shortcut" is doable in reverse if BHR is not reached (for whatever reason) and if ODWAG (old dood w/ a gun) forces you back up the same way you came down into Cattle Canyon?

Re: ODC vs. Sierra Club
One safety feature of the Sierra Club structure is that leaders cannot lead hikes at a level beyond what they are certified for. Leaders at the lowest rating level can only lead hikes on trails or well used ridge routes. One level above, leaders who can take groups cross-country must have passed a ...

Thanks Augie. I've never seen any hard data on which to base a conclusion that ODC outings have more mishaps than Sierra Club outings. Me neither. Re: ODC vs. Sierra Club
Thanks simonov. Great points made with great clarity. The waivers of both clubs spell out how hikers are essentially responsible for their own safety, but that doesn't really matter except maybe in court: it's the perception that many hikers will have, that they are in experienced, thoughtful hands,...

Re: ODC vs. Sierra Club
Thanks Kathy. I think it's the way the website is set up for the Outdoors Club that makes people think they are going on a hiking trip with a Sierra Club type leader. Bumping this to add a link to a post on another thread by AW regarding a possible route down into Cattle Canyon from the road coming down from Cow Canyon Saddle. Certainly would cut off a fair bit of distance on the way to Big Horn Ridge.

If they went from Sturdevant Camp to Newcomb Saddle and then up the Rim trail to Mt. Wilson, there are defintiely serious drop offs. Based on the mileage stated in the hike description (8 miles up), they went straight up from Sturtevant Camp to Wilson on the Sturtevant trail. It's amazing/scary how...

Re: Hikers body recovered from Mt Wilson
Based on the ODC description of the hike, it started at Chantry Flat, went to Sturtevant Camp then up to Mt. Wilson. The return route was to be on the Winter Creek trail back to Chantry. I assume the accident happened on the ascent route based on the "turning around" discussion the group h...
