Re: Ignorance and Hiking
My first exposure to ice+exposure was 21 years ago in Yosemite. Hiked up to Glacier Point via the Panorama Trail. This was in May and it was snowing off and on but it wasn't accumulating and the trail was completely snow free. We decided to take the 4-mile Trail down and very near the top the trail ...

Thanks Terry. I'd like to get up to Josephine again soon. It sounds like May might be an interesting time to do so!

Re: Mt. Lowe: 03-29-2008
Nice day up above the clouds wasn't it? Was there any ice/snow on the north side of San Gabriel Peak? I ran into a group of 3 on Mt. Lowe who had started at RedBox also (guy, 2 gals). I forgot to mention, as I was nearing Granite Gate, there was a guy hiking up the road in your normal day hiking gea...

Mt. Lowe: 03-29-2008
Posting this TR just so I can show the picture below. Started at Lake Ave. and hiked up to Mt. Lowe via Castle Canyon Trail. No snow left on the north side of Lowe except one small patch that can be side stepped. Flowers are nice below about 3500' elevation - hardly any above that for some reason. S...

Thanks for the input. Here's another batch from a hike from Lake Ave. to Mt. Lowe on 2008-03-29. Didn't see hardly any flowers above 3500'. #12 https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm3.static.flickr.com/2335/2372717284_067600f1cc.jpg #13 https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm3.static.flickr...

Re: Bailey Canyon to Hastings Peak
Yes I probably should have posted elsewhere, but when I started my last post all I intended to do was post his picture as a point of interest, then as an afterthought I googled his name and found the sad news, so i just tacked it on to the end of the post. Every time I've hiked up Bailey Canyon I've...

Water collection tunnels for Henninger Flats?
I found this photo on Flickr and the comment below it by 'fogdrip' indicates that it is a water collection tunnel for Henninger Flats. I've never seen or heard of these and was wondering if anyone has any info on them. The description of the photo indicates it is near the Idlehour Trail junction wit...

Re: Bailey Canyon to Hastings Peak
I didn't run into him this time, but I have several times in the past. In addition to the stuff you mentioned, he also told me he and his buddy constructed the flagpole with American flag that used to be on Hastings Peak. Anyone know why the pole was taken down? The last time I saw a flag up there ...

Glendora Ridge Road status.
Is the ridge road open? In February it was closed west of Cow Canyon Saddle, but I'm hoping they've reopened it since there hasn't been any significant snow at that elevation recently. Thanks.

I think that rock has been there for years. Here are some pictures from Rick's trip last year that show the rock. I've read of people being able to get around the cliffs up to the top of the falls, but have never looked for or found these routes. Here's a picture from Rick's collection showing some ...

Dead hawk was there a week earlier as well (descended via the road). Don't know how I missed it on the way up. Oh well. A falconer I know said it looks like a breeding Redtail. Looks like a Cooper's to me, but i defer. This must be your register entry... https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm3...

Re: Where the heck is Mt Chapman in relation to Timber Mountain?
Speaking of pilots and the backbone shown in pilot's pic, I was on that spine about 17 or 18 years ago when a fighter plane (forgive me but I don't know an F15 from a B52) came roaring up the canyon on the west side and flew what seemed a couple hundred feet directly overhead heading east. It was ki...

Garden spot indeed. Sad....be aware that lots of folks come up here from the city to drink, fornicate, shoot, and cause problems
What's even sadder is I'm nearly up to 200 posts...I'm going hiking...back later!

Re: Monrovia Peak: 03-15-2008
I took the long way up and down. I hate brushy steep ridges - I don't mind brush and I don't mind steep but I don't like them together! I probably made it to the top faster anyway - 10 miles in 3.5 hours - and I wanted to make it back down before the rain started.

Re: The 'What flower is it (and can you smoke it?)' thread
Thanks HJ. Using those names as a start, I found a couple of sites that seem to have tons of info on plants and flowers. USDA site . CalPhotos . It's apparent this flower identification gig can get complicated rather quickly. As an example, here's the results of a search for 'monkeyflower' - 125 ite...

Monrovia Peak: 03-15-2008
Last month I was foiled by snow and ice conditions within a half mile of the peak. 5 weeks later I figured the snow had melted and I was right. Reached the peak at about 9:30a just as the clouds started engulfing the mountains. When I got to the peak it was sunny and clear (especially to the north) ...

Flowers seen on a hike up to Monrovia Peak on the Ides of March (03-15-2008). I have no idea what they are so I'd appreciate a little help in identifying them.
