Re: Fire in Santa Anita Canyon: 2008-04-26
Looks like it is burning in Little Santa Anita Canyon tonight. Burning up towards Jones Peak I think. Tons of people on the streets of Sierra Madre trying to get a look. Lots of streets are barricaded and evacuations going on. Let's hope no homes get burned and that the firefighters stay safe.

Fire in Santa Anita Canyon: 2008-04-26
Afternoon of Saturday April 26th: fire in Santa Anita Canyon; flames shooting up along the ridge on the west side of the canyon. A picture or 2 a bit later. I suspect this might close access to Chantry Flats for awhile. Hmm. Added lame pics: https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm4.static.flickr...

Re: LA 16.2 mile hike with 7445' elevation gain
16.2-mile stair hike -- comprising 4,182 steps, with a 7,445-foot elevation gain. Don't have to worry about ticks, bears and lions! Hmm. 7445'/4182 steps = 1.78 vertical feet per step. Typical stair risers are 7 to 9 inches per code, not 21 inches. I guess the stair treads can be long and sloped bu...

Re: Who's going up Iron 4/19?
Turns out the weather wasn't as cool as I had hoped. Turned around at the saddle for a few reasons - one being I didn't have enough fluids on me for a warm weather hike. So be it. Was nice to meet KathyW as we crossed paths.
Is it Allison Saddle or Heaton Saddle? I've seen both.

The current version of the race is approximately 8.6 miles in length. The exact course has changed over the years due to trail damage caused by erosion, earthquakes and fire. For this reason no official course record is recognized. The present course configuration is considered the most difficult s...

My altimeter gave me 3100 ft total gain, seems to be pretty close. And had 9500 steps up and 10500 steps down, so between 8-9 miles. Nice hike, considering the temps were up there. " hiker bob " made a point of telling me that "his" trail was better than the mt. wilson trail bec...

I was one of the guys that turned around on the hike Alan mentioned. I had no gear and to be honest (being from the south) I don't share or understand the enthusiasm for the frozen white stuff. So be it. I had a blast anyway! Go give it a try and enjoy it - be smart and safe.
