I agree with Jim's take on the difference between starting at 3 points vs Buckhorn. Trail from 3 points to the saddle has great views of Devils Canyon. No nonsense training hike: 4700', 18 miles, 6.5 hours round trip. Henninger Flats is still officially closed. As of the morning of May 2nd, Bailey Canyon is closed until further notice. Whatever.

This morning I saw a notice (dated 4/30) posted at the Bailey Canyon parking lot that stated that Chantry Flats was open but ALL trails leading from Chantry were closed. Mt. Wilson Trail was also closed. Bailey Canyon was NOT on the list.

I'm very interested in the conditions on that exact route too. I'm just guessing but I would expect some snow (not sure how much though) on the north side of Twin and perhaps in the shady areas between Buckhorn and the saddle. The trail from Three Points to the saddle I would expect to be snow free ...

And now we know why! Thanks for the story - that's one hell of a way to discover hiking and the outdoors!

The inciweb site I linked to above is reporting as of 10:00am April 30th that the road to Chantry Flat is open. I for one am surprised.

As a dayhiker, my adventures haven't lasted more than 10 hours.

54 days in Capitol Reef? I'm also intrigued about why? I spent about 12 hours there once...most of it sleeping.
