Re: Mt Wilson loop-Chantry, Newcomb Pass, Winter Creek Trail

Nice loop hike. How would you describe the condition of the Rim Trail (from Newcomb up to Mt. Wilson)? Last time I was on it the lower portion was a bit overgrown and the upper portion had a couple of washouts.

Was there a lot of skeeters?

Re: Sierra Madre Trails closed

Northeast Pasadena, adjacent to Sierra Madre, has received over 2" of rain since Thursday and it is currently raining pretty hard Friday night. Talked with one of the organizers of the Trail Run and it is postponed (obviously) and they are looking at maybe June 14th to re-schedule it.

It's 6:15p and the Mt. Wilson cam is reporting 35 F, some hail and a layer of snow on the ground. Picture is obscured by clouds.

More useless info. :)

I did this same hike in July of '07 and even then the skeeters (gdmf skeeters!) were thick starting at Sturtevant Camp up to about Halfway Rest. Good motivation to keep moving during the steepest part of the route.

You picked a great day to hike to Mt. Wilson  !!! Not your typical 100 degree day hike. Anyway - nicely done. The skeeters were thick on my hike up the trail today and I could only imagine how much worse they would get if I had kept going higher. One note for future reference, you should not ...

Mt. Wilson Trail burn area: 05-18-2008

Took some pictures of the burned parts of the Mt. Wilson Trail above Sierra Madre today. The fire burned both sides of Little Santa Anita Canyon from the flood control dam (just above the houses) up to First Water. Trail is in good shape up to the crossover trail (except for a few dirt slides in the...

Here are some pictures of the canyon bottom taken on 2008-05-18. The fire didn't get up canyon any further than First Water. Below first water there are areas that looked unaffected, some that looked completely cleared of vegetation and some where maybe just the undergrowth was burned but the canopy...

I use the www.inciweb.org site for most info on road closures and fire info.

With the Mt. Baldy Road closed at Shinn, there is no access to any of the trail heads including Icehouse and Manker.

Re: Fire above Baldy Village

There will be more erosion due to bare slopes but not due to hikers. In an ideal world I'd agree. But the truth is hikers cut switchbacks and the less brush there is the more likely they'll do so. They'll go straight up the hill and come straight down the hill making 2 new use trails that criss cro...

I grew up in Louisiana and Southeast Texas...not known for mountainous terrain to say the least (the high point in New Orleans is some freeway overpass I believe)...so I didn't start hiking until I moved to the land of fruits, nuts and flakes - the Bay Area. Hiked around there for about a year - Sun...
