Nice pics - cool. I was in the same area last Sunday.

I must admit I was surprised to read your plans to go to Cucamonga in this heat. Probably a good choice to turn around.

Re: Search for hikers near Heaton Flats

1.5 miles southwest of Iron possibly puts them on the WSW ridge on the north side of Allison Gulch and not on the SSW ridge that the 'regular' trail follows.

The WSW ridge is the same ridge Tom and Travis climbed in February.

Thoughts and prayers with friends and family.

Great job on reaching the top of our little part of the world. I agree with RichardK...take the Devils Backbone over to the ski lift and ride it down...a real knee saver.

Nope...don't see your name on the permit. Says only 1 person in my group...that'd be me! Whew. Phone the Mt. Baldy Ranger Station/Visitor Center at 909-982-2829 to get a permit the day before your hike and they'll leave it on the information board out front for you to pick up... https://eispiraten.c...

I didn't go on that hike. If I did I would get a permit. If I couldn't get one, I wouldn't go.

I wasn't paying that much attention to the local greenery, but I do recall walking by or between quite a few 3 to 4 foot tall pine trees as I went west from Kelly's Camp. That must have been one hell of a fire if it's been desolate for so long.

Didn't know skunks were up that high. Yeah, me neither. First I've ever seen one outside of urban areas. I heard a rustling noise in some brush as I passed it so I turned and saw that it was a skunk. I bolted down the trail a few yards (out of spray range) before turning around to look at him. The ...

And why was it the hardest? The hikes that became my hardest became that way because I was not well prepared for what I ended up doing: bit off too much for what I was capable of doing (i.e. out of shape), not enough water, improper gear selection , not hydrating or eating properly, etc. (i.e. an E...
