1.5 miles southwest of Iron possibly puts them on the WSW ridge on the north side of Allison Gulch and not on the SSW ridge that the 'regular' trail follows.

The WSW ridge is the same ridge Tom and Travis climbed in February.

Re: 1st picture: I seriously doubt you could see anything in Mexico with that much haze. And I'm sure you meant "east" of San Diego instead of west...I hope. It's been about 20 years since I was up there and the view does not look familiar...sorry.

Quick fun hike up to Mt. Lawlor from Red Box. Started from an empty parking lot a little before 6:00a and returned to a huge throng of National Trails Day volunteers preparing to go to work. My default indoor hike is to the fridge for a beer.

My default outdoor hike is Hastings Peak via Bailey Canyon. Not quite 75 times but I'm not the animal that Taco is
