Re: Ontario Peak, 20 July
So I am going to Ontario Peak via Icehouse Saddle on Sunday, leaving at 6:00am to beat the heat (actually, it's only supposed to be about 70 degrees). I've never been there before. I'm going in any case, but if anyone wants to come along let me know. I am a reasonably strong hiker for the uphills, ...

Re: Josephine Peak west ridge exploratory: 07-12-2008
I used to just read 'em, and that'd be fine for the trip. I'd do it by memory. Now, I print 'em out, 'cause I got no memory left. Sigh. Yup. I was asking myself, "SELF! Did the TR say right then left or left then right?" I did not get the answer right, and went left. I'm new to this cross...

Josephine Peak west ridge exploratory: 07-12-2008
I had about 2 hours to squeeze some sort of hike into so I explored the HPS route up to the west ridge of Josephine. Parked at mile marker 22.45 on the Angeles Forest highway (about 2.5 miles north of Clear Creek Junction) at elevation 3340'. I didn't make the ridge but I was able to eliminate one r...

Great pics...thanks. Have you been down LSA before - if so, did the fire make it easier or harder?

Re: Car camping between Altadena and Sierra Madre
Yes, the gate is usually closed at night, but I've seen Boy Scouts overnight camping in the park. Call Sierra Madre police...they'll tell you if you can "camp" there or not...just tell them you have a tent!MikeSash wrote:I think they close the gate at night

I'm not sure where the route the HPS folks used is; perhaps somewhere around "E." Here is where I think the HPS TR's start. It's 2.5 miles from Clear Creek and you head south to get up to the main ridge (both things agree with stuff I read in the HPS TR's). Zoom in and you can imagine a u...

Good stuff. ...but another goes around to the steep east side of Timber. What the heck? Anyone know what this is? Maybe it's just people who thought the trail down the Middle Fork left precisely from the saddle (it actually leaves from a point about 50 yards south of the true saddle). On my hike up ...

Re: Josephine Peak: 07-05-2008
Well, maybe I'll have to go up Josephine one of these days after all. I've always avoided it since the primary route is up a fire road. :( I took the fire road up this time and if you start early it is in the shade and is one of the more scenic fire roads around (if such a thing is possible). Other...

Beautiful pictures. How do you like the tripod? It cost only $4 but does not have a thingy that rotates 360 degrees (for universal adjustment). It holds a lightweight point and shoot digital camera without falling over and weighs only a few ounces. Serves a basic function, but if your camera weighs...

The guy in the jeep was probably Gary Hilliard, who is the race director for the Mt. Disappointment 50k/50mile trail race. This year, it is being held on August 8. Here is a link to the web site: http://www.mtdisappointment50k.com/index.shtml Gary Hilliard has also run the Badwater race from Badwat...

Josephine Peak: 07-05-2008
Had time for a hike up to Josephine Peak via the fire road. Started at 6a and finished at 9a. The early start and a slight breeze kept it from getting too hot, but I still drank 1 liter of water and 0.5 liter of Gatorade. Road is well shaded on the way up at this time of day. The bugs were plentiful...

Saw this squiggly white line (I circled it in red) on Google Maps/Earth near Occidental Peak. Any ideas what it is? I'd rather bang my head against a rock for 3.5 days (or climb iron mt. 78 times in a row) than try and convince the douchebags in Washington to spend tax money properly. Just vote in a new douchebag next election and who knows, you might accidentally get one that does something right.
