Re: Altadena Crest Trail (Loma Alta segment): 2008-08-30
HJ, this trail will get you most of the way from the toll road near Pinecrest back to your car at Lake Ave. It starts about 50 feet west of the bridge over Eaton Wash and about 100 feet east of the gate at Pinecrest (too bad the gate is always locked due to the land slide that closed the toll road)....

Re: Bailey Canyon Trail Run
I was surpirsed to see that the pole on top of Jones Peak is gone. The summit is marked by a plastic orange "thing" draped over a rock. I'm guessing they took the pole out when they turned the peak into a makeshift helipad during the fire last spring. The orange thing and a rock is all th...

Altadena Crest Trail (Loma Alta segment): 2008-08-30
I needed a hike to stretch the legs so I decided to finally check out the eastern segment (Loma Alta Trail) of the Altadena Crest Trail (ACT). This is a route that will eventually run from the Arroyo Seco to Eaton Canyon through the foothills above Altadena . Basically it is a single track trail tha...

That has always been my understanding. Makes sense too. The trail never really crosses into the Sheep Mtn. Wilderness - just follows the boundary. According to this site...you only need a permit to enter Sheep Mtn. from the East Fork TH.

I don't recall a more recent 1st hand account but I recommend searching the forum for something more recent. I've heard it is not as reliable as Columbine. Columbine was flowing nicely 2 weeks ago.

Re: Trail & Condor canyon
Looks like you got your work cut out for you on Condor Jr.
It looks like a real interesting peak to get to but you can bet I'd be doing it the easy way - a stroll down the ridge from Big Condor! I'll take a picture and send it to ya!
Seriously, though, good luck on getting this one done.

Here is our beautiful black bear (even though he's brown). Same general location (I'll only say it's somewhere around Newcomb's/Chilao). I hope no one shoots him! He has to make it until the end of Sept, then he's safe for the winter. Thanks for the pictures, cougar! Here's a video of his cousin I ...

OK, so if we make a big-damn-all-of-SoCal-board, what should it encompass? Just mountain-related, or all sports, or also offroading (I'm not against this!), etc etc? I'm only interested in hiking in SoCal. I'd never seek out a forum on anything else. I might read a photography or mountain bike foru...

Re: 2008019 Thunder Mountain at Sunset
i went down cedar canyon from Telegraph last year. it was really nice shale that you could essentially rollerblade down. we got down pretty fast. but right where the upper canyon meets the trail camp and the trail there is about 300-500 feet of impassible manzanita. we were stuck in it for about 20...

Re: 2008019 Thunder Mountain at Sunset
Isn't that about where Chapman Trail is? Yes, I believe it is just north/above the Chapman trail...Looks like a steep manzanita hell to get from the point on the map to the Chapman Trail. But I'm basing that on the google earth view. Maybe it can be bypassed on the west side slopes of Cedar. Just c...
