Re: Forgotten Anniversaries

He had to get across the south face of San Gabriel didn't he? When was Mueller Tunnel built?

https://www.robertstrongwoodward.com/Sc ... rails.html

I've always understood there was a trail carved into the cliff face that is the south wall of the tunnel. Is it still visible?

Re: The Andrew Curtis Tungsten Mine

Nice story. Incandescent light bulbs are the everyday use of tungsten that I know of. They're going to be outlawed fairly soon if they aren't already. So I looked it up... Tungsten , or wolfram , is a chemical element with the symbol W and atomic number 74. Tungsten is a rare metal found naturally o...

Be careful when tossing this bench over the edge because the old trail is down below somewhere. Just saying.

Here's a contour map of Islip area. There is a sorta level spot on the south ridge (ssw ridge) at ~300 ft below the peak (circled in blue). Red line is a crudely drawn contour 300 ft below peak.

There is a firebreak that goes straight up from Henninger's in the far SW corner that is a lot faster. We came down the firebreak this time and dropped to the nature trail back to the visitor center. At some point I'll try the shortcut up from the main road. IMG_20230216_123627766_HDR.jpg IMG_20230...

Nice hike! Cool pics. Thanks. I've had the luck of watching (through binoculars) the bulldozers making firebreaks on unbelievably steep ridges (in the Verdugo's). They defy gravity while destroying everything in their path, then backing up over it and destroying it again. Looked to me that they were...
