Re: What's a good way to measure hiking performance?
I do Iron Mountain in about 3.5 hours. Alan, I think this formula, which I got from the Sierra Club, is meant for those traveling at sub-sonic speeds. It doesn't really work with di-lithium crystal powered shoes. Seriously, I slow down a lot in steep terrain. In my formula, I'm adding 1/2 h...

Re: What's a good way to measure hiking performance?
One gauge of how well you're doing is to routinely do a set training route, Mt. Wilson via Sturdevant Trail for example. You could track your time over the course of a training period and see how much improvement you can make. It's a little boring to always do the same hike. To get an idea of how we...

Re: bad things happen in nice places
Cool. I love finding out new info about stuff in my own back yard.
So the only time I've hiked the Fall Creek Trail was from near Hidden Spgs. I take it that the dirt road from BTR to the CG is fairly easy to find? I'm sure I've driven by it a thousand times.

Re: bad things happen in nice places
I have hiked and biked the Haines Canyon fire road, but it seems endless when hiking. The fire road does seem endless. That's why I'm so happy to have discovered the Sister Elsie Trail which cuts off a lot of the drudgery. The Sister Elsie Trail has two branches . After you pass all the flood contr...

Re: bad things happen in nice places
Really? I live in TJ, so I'm over there quite frequently to hike Trail Canyon, Mt. Lukens, and sometimes Fox/Condor. Never had a problem, but have definitely seen the trash and crap. A lot of the time, I'm on the trail by first light, and sometimes back early PM, so that may keep me out of a...

And you didn't go out and try to pet the cute cubs? :) Seriously, thanks for the report. I myself have seen bears over in the San Gorgonio area recently and heard reports of recent bear "raids" on food there, but haven't heard of any over this way. I'll keep a closer eye on my "bear p...

Re: i would like to learn to hike in winter conditions
WTC (the successor to BMTC) is still being taught by the Sierra Club: http://angeles.sierraclub.org/wtc/ They use Freedom of the Hills as their text. They will not teach ice axe and crampon skills, but they will teach winter travel and backcountry camping techniques and take you on two snow trips (t...

Re: quick overnight backpacking trips
All of the preceeding suggestions sound like good ones. Some other ideas: Switzers (the tent sites are just above the falls) is nice for a quick one if you go in on a Friday and come out on Saturday. It's very very popular, but my friend and I had the place to ourselves Friday night. We then did Str...

Re: Good hiking routes up Mount Pacifico and Mount Gleason??
For Pacifico, one can take a kind of interesting hike from Alder Saddle. To get to Alder Saddle, one drives up the ACH past Chilao to Three Points. One turns left on the Sulpher Springs/Santa Clara Divide Rd and drives past all the organizational camps to the vicinity of the Horse Flats Group Campgr...

Re: Mt Baldy Pine and Dawson on Oct 13
I've done it from Wrightwood. The drop down from Dawson to the Dawson-Baldy saddle is a bit disheartening. Then, after you drop from Dawson, you have to climb the back side of Baldy, which is pretty steep, steeper than via the ski hut trail. I think the good news is that it's only 10 miles from the ...

Re: Old Mount Emma, Mount Emma, Cole Point and Mount Gleason
I remember going up in the mountains back in the 60's when those sites were still active. Kind of a trip to be up there in the "middle of no where" and come across a military installation. A lot of the "Prison Camps" and maintenance camps are really just the quarters from days of...

Lost Gear :-(
Apparently, I left my trekking poles stuck into the dirt across the road from the Devil's Canyon trailhead. I don't suppose, hoping against hope, that someone perchance found them?

Of course! Take advantage of those after Christmas sales. Always Google what you want and check eBay and Craigslist before you buy. REI also has used gear sales which can have some amazing deals.

Re: bad things happen in nice places
Yes, a 7.62 mm AK round is about .30 caliber. I think it's .308 if I remember correctly. I guess you could mount a scope on it and use it as a deer rifle, but (especially with a 30 rd. magazine!) it isn't exactly what I picture a serious deer hunter with. I'm just guessing, but I think that someone ...

... someone dressed in camo, I thought maybe he was a fisherman, but when he pulled out a huge rifle, I was thinking "S.O.B!", I was so surprised... I hope he was a deer hunter, but I've seen 7.62 AK-47 rounds on the ground near Buckhorn. An AK-47 isn't exactly a deer rifle. Amazing that ...

Re: Lytle Creek - Trail to Buck Point?
This might not be quite as exciting as the South Fork of Lytle Creek, but there are the remains of a trail (still sort of passable* as of a year ago) up the Middle Fork of Lytle. You hit Icehouse Saddle from the East and then take the conventional route from the saddle to the top. Then you can have ...

http://outside.away.com/magazine/0797/9707dark.html Very interesting article, although there are quite a number of inaccuracies. Rather scary. I typically feel safe beyond the "yahoo zone" which extends to about 4 or 5 miles from the nearest trail head. Once I get away from the trail head...

Re: bad things happen in nice places
In reaching for a positive angle on the tequila drinking death story, I am struck by the fact that none of his buddies used either a sword or a baseball bat on the victim. "struck," Alan? :) Nice pun. It's a pretty big stretch to put a positive spin on this one. Probably ignorance and alc...

Re: Sleeping bags...
The Mtn Hdw bag really compresses well. It's 900 fill I believe. It's a bit pricey if not on sale.
I don't recall exactly, but I believe it will compress down in a regular stuff sack to about 10" x 5". If you're interested, I'll measure it when I get home.

I bought a Mtn Hardwear Phantom 15 about a year ago on sale at REI for about $250. It's rated at 15' F and weighs less than 2 lbs (1lb, 15 oz). I took it snow camping near Lake Sabrina last March, and it was great (I did wear heavy long johns too). I've used it locally above 10K in April in snowy co...
