Re: Pallet, Will Thrall and surrounding Peaks - Oct 20th

It's kind of interesting how HPS (and everyone else for that matter) decides what a peak is. I've always thought it odd that the summit on Pleasant View Ridge between Pallet and Williamson has no name even though it has about 300' of prominence: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=34. ... ize=l&...

Re: Pallet, Will Thrall and surrounding Peaks - Oct 20th

As far as the ridge itself, the USGS designation is for a big chunk of territory: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=34. ... ze=l&s=200 The high point as I understand it is: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=34. ... &layer=DRG It says "Pallet" on it, but that's just the name of ...

Re: Early Morning Mount Pacifico Hike - October 21

Ah, prominence, that most beloved of subjects to the peakbagger. Prominence is somewhat arbitrary. While 300' is widely used in Colorado, 500' is generally the Alaskan standard. In the British Isles, sometimes 15m (~50') is used. Why? Simply because where there are more peaks, something is needed to...

Re: Early Morning Mount Pacifico Hike - October 21

From Alder Saddle you can make an interesting loop. Head west the dirt road from Alder Saddle as shown by the blue line on your topo, but where the blue line and the pink line (from Pinyon Flats) start to converge, you can shoot up a fairly steep gully about 0.3 mi to meet the PCT. There is an obvio...

I use a scientific potassium/sodium excretion monitoring technique. As the body sweats, potassium and sodium salts are deposited on one's garments. By performing a careful analysis of changes in fabric flexibility due to salt deposition, I can determine overall exertion. (translation: I stick my shi...

Re: The most challenging hike in the San Gabriels?

I may try Baden Powell from Mine Gulch, straight up one of the chutes. Lotsa gain in a short distance. Looks nuts. That might qualify, but it's a tad different from a hike. The tough part on that one might just be the rock itself. I seem to remember that that stuff on the east side of B-P is pretty...

I'd say that's the toughest one though this version was harder: http://www.rickkent.net/ViewerPlus/view ... x?ID=80646 The Baldy 11 Peaks (without car shuttle) was pretty tough too. -Rick Yes, I remember reading about that one when you did it. You could always try this North Ridge route: http://www.summitpost.org/route/297109/north-ridge.html

I think Baden Powell from the South would be a worthy opponent.

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?

It would be interesting to know more of the history behind the old trail. I'll try to grab my dad's old copy of The San Gabriels by Robinson and give it a look. The info I did find was in the appendix of 1984 version of Trails of the Angeles, also by Robinson, under "Trails That Used to Be&quo...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?

I looked in my old 1984 copy of Robinson's Trails of the Angeles this morning. I thought I had remembered reading about an old route using Big Horn Ridge, and sure enough I was right (it was bound to happen sooner or later). :) There was a route that went from the old Weber Camp trail resort http://...

Re: Devil's Canyon Trail to Devil's Canyon TC and Falls

The upper falls are first a cascade and then more of a falls. I'd say on the order of a 20' drop. It's kind of fun to "do" some of the rock walls, although test your hand/foot holds ! One came off in my hands. The pool below the falls is really big and worth seeing in its own right. I thin...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?

Interesting idea. From the summit down to about 4600' doesn't look too bad in terms of nav although definitely steep. Below 4600' it looks like a real tough nav problem. The real question in my mind is how do you gain the ridge to start your ascent? The area around the confluence of Cattle and Coldw...

Devil's Canyon Trail to Devil's Canyon TC and Falls

Went down the Devil's Canyon Trail to the trail camp and the falls a couple of weeks ago. There was a little bit of water in pools in the side creek that the trail follows down to Devil's Canyon. Some of the pools looked a little stagnant. A couple looked filterable. There was no water at the Trail ...

I've been filing a "hike plan" with my sister ever since my dad went out for a hike -- and didn't return. It would have been really helpful when we were searching for my dad to have had more details although we did have a pretty good idea of what he was doing and where.

Re: What's a good way to measure hiking performance?

Well, of course, do what works best. No one formula is going to cover the world unless God is your mathematician. The formula, such as it is, tries to adjust your time estimate for elevation gain. Average mph is not meant to be your average mph on that hike but rather your average mph on relatively ...
