I honestly don't know what the mileage for the loop is. It's sort of a local hike that I do periodically when I don't have time to do a "big" hike.
I'm guessing that it's something on the order of 5 or 6 miles, just based on the topo and my experience of hiking on it.

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
Unfortunately, my digital camera went swimming at the bottom of upper Devil's Canyon Falls a few weeks ago, so I can't just snap a photo and post it. I might be able to get a friend to scan it.
Old maps are so cool.

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
Speaking of Big Horn Ridge ... I'm a former Army officer, and I have some old AMS (Army Map Service) and DMA (Defense Mapping Agency) maps that I got while still in the service. These are slightly different than the standard 1:24K 7.5' series topos available from the USGS. The one I'm looking at is ...

Re: The Verdugos -- Fire Warden's Grove Loop
Jim -- I like that loop. I didn't realize it had a name -- at least not that one. :-) I certainly recall the old car wreck. That loop was one of my possibilities for the weekend. :D Um, well, I'm not sure that's an "official" name. That's more of a Hikin' Jim "I need some way ...

Alternative Hiking Areas
Since a lot of normally available hikes are currently off limits, here's a link to a list of alternative hiking areas. Please note that this list is from 2002 and that closure information isn't up to date. The list can be useful for identifying alternative hiking areas, but one still needs to do one...

The Verdugos -- Fire Warden's Grove Loop
OK, so practically every local hiking spot is closed right now ... except the Verdugo Mountains (correct me please if I'm wrong!). There are a number of "trails" in the Verdugos, mostly on dirt fire roads. Here's a personal favorite that is actually mostly on trail and not on dirt road: Th...

Re: Angeles National Forest Closure - October 23
The Sister Elsie Trail is still in the ANF even if it is within LA City boundaries. Food for thought... Yeah, I saw that map that Alan posted a link to. Lukens is definitely in the green area on that map, but I question the map's accuracy. I don't think it's possible to have incorporated city land ...

Re: What's a good way to measure hiking performance?
I don't seem to be affected by the amount of weight I carry, therefore I have not included backpack weight in my log. Now this is indeed an interesting physical property. It occurs to me that the point at which increased mass is no longer relavant is at singularity (i.e. a black hole). Naturally, A...

Re: Angeles National Forest Closure - October 23
it looks like the Verdugos for me... Where are you headed, Alan? (I don't want to be startled by the blinding flash of light as you pass) :) I was thinking either the Fire Warden's Grove loop in the Verdugos or the Sister Elsie Trail. I'll probably do the Sister Elsie Tr. My loppers and I have a da...

Re: Angeles National Forest Closure - October 23
If it's in the San Gabriels, it's pretty much closed. Private inholdings would be the exception, but if it's private, good luck on getting permission to hike during a fire crisis. I suppose you could hike up the Arroyo Seco near JPL for a ways since that's City of Pasadena, but you run into ANF land...

Yes, Mount Lukens is great city hike. But I have already hiked it. http://www.gpsmountaineering.com/mountlukens I guess I could try another route, The route you took is from Deukmejian (if I'm spelling that right) Wilderness Park, which is an interesting route. The Sister Elsie trail route that I o...

Re: Angeles National Forest Closure - October 23
According to this: http://www.towncrier.com/pages/breaking ... 022.b.html all of the local NF's are closed. San Jacinto State Park is also closed according to that article.
Wouldn't be surprised if Santa Monica NRA, Topanga State Park, Will Rodgers, etc. were closed too.

I completely understand. I had to turn around on my hike on Saturday at 10:30 AM in order to be back by 2:00 -- just when I was getting into the interesting stuff. Well, try it some time. I think it's a good little route to keep your legs stretched out. Kind of pleasant on the back stretch of the PC...

How steep is Mine Gulch? Mine Gulch isn't actually the problem. It's getting from the Mine down the side gulch into Mine Gulch proper that is tough. One starts here: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=34. ... &layer=DRG at the mine, proceeds down the gully past here: http://www.topozone.com/ma...

Mine Gulch/Vincent Gulch/East Fork SG River
Went from Vincent Gap on ACH to the confluence of Vincent Gulch and Prairie Fork/East Fork SG River on Saturday 10/20/2007. Great weather. Lots of good fall color, particularly in the Black Oaks around Wrightwood. Robinson's book calls it 3 miles one way. The trail head sign calls it 4.5. I think 4....

This map of the endangered frog closure area has been posted elsewhere on this forum, but I thought that it might be useful enough to warrant posting here in a more easily referenced posting:

...the closure sign seemed to me to be ambigously placed as far as warning hikers to stay off the Rattlesnake Trail. You've got that right. I was down there a couple of months ago, and the sign was not clear at all. This map clarifies things some: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/angeles/documen ... ibit-B....

Thanks, Janice, I'd be curious to know the answer. I'm going to be out this weekend in the ANF. I may stop in at the Grassy Hollow Visitor Center and ask one of the rangers; perhaps they won't wait 2 - 3 days when asked in person. ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

Looks like some good hiking. I bailed one time on Williamson. Really icy conditions. Hadn't brought any equipment. The blue line is XC, but it's pretty open -- at least on the ridge top. I haven't done the S face of Goodykoontz. The lower part of the blue line is under forest closure, the part that goes through Little Rock Creek. There is a trail to Burkhart Saddle, and I understand it's not under closure. The t...
