Re: Angeles National Forest Closure - October 23
This http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/24787/fil ... 102607.pdf was issued Friday. It says Mt San J St. Prk is closed. The tram website http://www.pstramway.com/ says that the State Park is closed. I guess maybe keep an eye on those two websites this week and see what happens. There are a host of re-ope...

Re: City Hiking Section
I think I'm with Travis here. If you're referring to the built up area in and around the LA basin, I think LA Urban Area is pretty descriptive. I don't see a need to start splitting hairs between suburban and urban. Urban in the general sense used here is appropriate. I think urban vs. mountain is a...

Dark Ruddy-Brown Deer?
So when I was out hiking in the Verdugos, this past Saturday, I came across a small deer. Most of the deer I see in the local area are a sort of a light tannish brown color. This one was a dark ruddy-brown color. It also appeared to be a bit smaller than I'm used to. Anyone know what gives here? Is ...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
Yeah, does sound like a recon or two is in order. I'm getting hitched in April, so I'm kind of crunched for training and hiking time right now, but if I get a chance, I may reconnoiter the Heaton Flats trail and see if the trail from the Heaton Flats to Weber Camp is worth anything, scope out the lo...

Re: Cascades Trip
$80 bucks... Do you think $80 would be a good deal? Um, let me give you a definite "maybe." :) If you're headed for only a couple of Federal spots, then maybe not. Somewhere around three or four entry fees it makes sense to get the pass. Let's say you're going to: Cascades NP Olympic NP R...

Re: Cascades Trip
a permit that allows parking on all of Oregon, or Washington, or CA, etc etc? Wow, sounds like a very cool trip. Regarding a all-in-one multi-state parking permit, I'm not sure such an animal exists. You can however get a National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass. See http://www.nps.gov/fe...

I was ready to accost anyone who looked like your picture. :-) Just look for my "signature" white canvas Tilley hat. That pull from La Tuna Canyon back up to Fire Wardens Grove is a pretty good pull in spots and quite exposed. Not all that surprising that it could be a bit tiring in the s...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
A little more text to accompany Tom's photos would be helpful, but yes it looks a) pretty gnarly climbing out of Cattle Canyon and b) like a generally nasty bushwhack from the west. Question: What is the trail shown in IMG_2302 and IMG_2301? If that's the old trail, then it's in surprisingly good sh...

Wildwood Canyon Trail? I've heard of that one and seen some info on the web. Can you post anything here for us? First hand info is always the best.Maxwell's Demon wrote:I really like the wildwood canyon trail. It would be nice to have a message board or section dedicated to LA trails.

Re: The Verdugos -- Fire Warden's Grove Loop
lol Great picture. That's exactly it, the bench marks the spot where you turn off the fire road and go down the ridge trail. There were two more of these deluxe reclining benches at one of the saddles between Fire Wardens Grove and the above referenced trail junction. These were placed, according to...

Very nice ... and with some decent mileage too. Good photos. What time were you through the Fire Wardens Grove Loop area? I was half wondering if I might run into you on the trail. I didn't see my car at the eastern La Tuna Canyon TH in the photos, so maybe you went through there later in the day? I...

I'm adding few add'l notes on the Fire Wardens Grove Loop based on my most recent hike, this past Saturday. The additions are in italic text. Fire Warden's Grove Loop . 6.9 miles RT Start at the turn out on La Tuna Canyon Road here: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=34. ... &layer=DRG . The tr...

OK, this is a really minor minor point, but would it be better to call it "LA Urban Hiking?" The current title, "LA City Hiking," could be mistakenly construed to mean "only hikes within the City of Los Angeles."

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
Thanks for posting all this info, Travis.
The Cattle Canyon Route is attractive -- particularly because of the ease of a shuttle, that and the fact that there have been a lot of problems with vandalism and theft at the E Fork TH.
But dang that climb out of Cattle Canyon would be steep.

Ah, I understand your route now, it definetly looks better than that historic trail, following the ridges eliminates a lot of the bush. I traced what I think is your route on Google Earth, check it out. I think either route in blue would be worth a shot. Yes, that's it exactly. It's kind of a good ...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
Does this route make sence, I am trying to piece it all together. Good trace of the old trail. I was mentioning the trail more out of historical interest. I think it would be so overgrown as to be useless now. As an actual for real route in the here and now, here's the route I had in mind: Take the...

Just for fun, I hand calculated a few UTM's for points along the old trail from Coldwater Canyon to the crest of BHR. The old trail runs from just above the U turn in the dirt road marked on the USGS 1:24K topo (MOUNT SAN ANTONIO Quad) map above the Widman Ranch (where the Heaton Flat Trail comes in...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
My machete hasn't been used in a few years. I think that the "trail" errr route, should suck only up until we hit the ridge proper. From the air, it looks similar to Copter Ridge, which was nice. I'm thinking you're right -- once on the ridge, things should ease up in terms of brush. It's...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
I noticed on the topozone maps that there is a trail from Coldwater Canyon up to Eagle Mine and then on up to the San Antonio Ridge (about half way between Iron and Baldy). That also looks very very interesting. Any info on whether that trail is real or not? Define "real." There really wa...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
8) It would be cool if we could organise an assault, of sorts, on that ridge. My mind does keep going there. :) On Google Erf, the ridgeline itself looks easy going as far as brush from about 6,000ft up. The ridgeline ascending from Widman Ranch looks easy. I can clearly see a trail, a good looking...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
Yeah, definitely a pain. You'd hike in just as though you were going for Big Iron or the Allison Mine but turn off at the saddle where you'd have to choose Allison or Iron and head into Coldwater. I've heard this saddle referred to as Iron Mtn Saddle. It's about 4 miles to the saddle from the TH, so...
