I checked out the TR on SummitPost. Cool TR. TR helped me appreciate the pix more.

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
The old trail (I posted something earlier in this thread about it's course via a few UTM points) left Coldwater Canyon approx. where the Heaton Flats Trail enters. I assume the HF trail was the primary route into upper Coldwater, probably well built and heavily travelled due to mining activity. I sp...

Re: Iron Mountain <3 Hours - 11/10/07
Uh, sure. Seriously though, that brush doesn't look like much fun. I'll have to take a look in person some time. I do recall from the last time over there on the HF trail that the brush is bad. The good news is that the Fossil Can. N ridge does look doable in terms of grade and navigability,...

Ditto on the thanks for the captions. Photo IMG_6435.JPG appears to be the ridge that runs just north of Fossil Canyon which was one of the routes we were looking at.
Ugh. Lots of nasty brush.

Re: Iron Mountain <3 Hours - 11/10/07
Hey, Rick, congrats on a great summit of Big Iron. BTW, I always enjoy all your photos of summit registers and appreciate that you take so many photos. I think some of your photos are looking into Coldwater Canyon and perhaps some are of Big Horn Ridge. I don't know if you'd have time, but any furth...

Re: Yucaipa Ridge Traverse
Good photos. Really like the old register entries from the 60's. Very cool. Looks like an interesting place. I've never checked it out. I typically head into the SGW if I'm over that way. Looks pretty gnarly getting up and down from the ridge, but cool to have a loop. What kind of shape was the ridg...

Re: Hiker missing on San Jacinto found ..
Thanks for the link to the news story. They report that temps were "sub zero." I think they mean below freezing (or maybe they're on the Celsius scale). Thanks also for the photo of the missing poster. All interesting. There's quite a bit more info, including a posting by an RMRU member on...

Sister Elsie Trail
I went up the Sister Elsie Trail in Haines Canyon in Tujunga today (11/10/2007) and did some brush clearing. The worst brush that I was aware of is the first quarter mile or so on the left branch of the trail after the junction where the right branch of the trail goes up to rejoin fire road 2N76. Ac...

I have seen him listed as a speaker at local Sierra Club meetings. Wouldn't surprise me a bit if he was still out hiking.

I haven't been up that way for a number of years, but my memory is that there are some false trails. Just keep a sharp eye on the map (and post a TR afterwards).

Re: Angeles National Forest likley to be reopened on 11-8-07
The same date has been posted on San Gorgonio Wilderness Assoc. board, so this looks pretty legit. The Forest Supervisor, Jeanne Wade Evans, has rescinded the Forest Closure Order No. 07-6 effective November 8th (Thurday) 2007. Fire Restrictions Order No. 07-5 are still in effect. Call Mill Creek Ra...

Re: Smith Mountain - South Summit Rock Climb
Are you planning on going up that drainage in the last picture? Much steeper than 5.6! Steeper than 5.6? I usually think of class as referring to the technical difficulty of a particular route, not the steepness. If the hand holds/foot holds are obvious and easy, then vertical can be class 3. For e...

Here's the link to Erik's trip: http://angeles.sierraclub.org/hps/archives/hps01306.htm I was a little off. He did the 17 peaks as a traverse from Fish Creek TH to Angelus Oaks. Rick K did him one better by making it into a loop. Still, anyone who can do all 17 SGW peaks in one day is pretty much an...
